Seward County loses the weekend series 2-1 at No. 11 Cowley

ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. - Seward County Community College lost the three-game series 2-1 at No. 11 Cowley College this past weekend. The Saints fell in game one 10-2, won game two 6-0, and lost the final game of the weekend 2-0 in Arkansas City, Kansas. Seward County goes back to .500 on the year with an 18-18 overall record. 

To start the weekend the Saints trailed early after the Tigers scored two in the bottom of the first and added three more in the second inning and led 5-0. In the top of the fourth inning, Seward County was able to get on the scoreboard with a ground ball RBI by AJ Folds to score Kase Johnson. Seward County trailed 5-1 but Cowley once again responded with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth and led 7-1. 

The Tigers continued their scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning with three more runs and took a commanding 10-1 lead. The Saints responded in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI from Peter Goldy to score Braden Boisvert from third base. Seward County went scoreless in the seventh inning and lost 10-2 in the first game of the weekend. 

Sam Berberich received the loss from the mound and gave up 10 runs on eight hits in five innings of action. Berberich also had three strikeouts and one walk in the first of the weekend game.

In the second game on Saturday the Saints started off the nine-inning game with an explosive first inning. The Saints start off the gem with a single from KP Werner and later scored off of an RBI double by Wyatt Grant. With two outs Peter Goldy connected on a single to right field to score Kase Johnson and Wyatt Grant to give the Saints a 3-0 lead. Jonathan Cantu followed suit with a double to right field to score AJ Folds and Peter Goldy and Seward County led 5-0 after the top of the first inning. 

Seward County added one more run in the top of the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly to left field by Wyatt Grant to score KP Werner from third base. The Saints led the Tigers 6-0 and closed out the game for their first win against a ranked opponent this season and improved to 18-17 on the season.

Dylan Day received the win for the Saints with six innings pitched and allowed zero runs, on four hits, and seven strikeouts. Cory Didier came in to close out the game with three innings pitched, gave up one hit, and struck out five batters.

On Sunday the Saints faced off against the Tigers in the third and final game of the weekend. Cowley scored first in the bottom of the second inning and took a 1-0 lead over Seward in the nine-inning game. The Saints were unable to get on the board with eight hits in the game and left eight players on base. The Tigers added one more run in the sixth inning and took a 2-0 lead. Neither team scored in the final three innings and Cowley won the final game 2-0.

Mason Martinez started the game and received the loss with six innings pitched. Martinez gave up five hits, one earned run, and four strikeouts. Eric Turner came into the game and pitched two innings and gave up two hits, zero runs, and one strikeout. 

Seward County will be back in action on Thursday in Liberal, Kansas against Butler Community College with the first game starting at 1 pm.
