Seward County defeats Dodge City in doubleheader at Brent Gould Field

LIBERAL, Kan. - Seward County sweeps the series against Dodge City Community College with a game three win 6-5, and a game four win 10-6. The Saints have won eight games in a row to get back to .500 on the year with a 14-14 overall record and a 10-6 conference record. This is the first series sweep in the conference season and the Saints are now tied for second in the Jayhawk West with Cloud County and Hutchinson hold the top spot with a 13-3 conference record.

Wyatt Grant had five home runs in the series against Dodge City and now leads the Conference in home runs with 12 on the season.

In the first game of the day, the Saints entered the bottom of the first inning down 1-0 but responded with an RBI single from Reed Thomas to score Wyatt Grant. Seward County took the lead in the bottom of the third inning with a double from Braden Biosvert that scored KP Werner, Kase Johnson, and Wyatt Grant to lead 4-1. 

The Saints extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth with a two-RBI single from KP Werner to score Peter Goldy and AJ Folds. With a 6-1 lead Seward County looked to close the game out in the top of the seventh inning but Dodge City responded with four runs to cut the lead down to 6-5. The Saints brought Braden Boisvert for the save and closed out the game and Seward County claimed the 6-5 victory.

Mason Martinez started the game for the Saints and pitched 6.2 innings with eight hits, four earned runs and a season-high 13 strikeouts in the game. Martinez has 44 strikeouts this season which is third in the KJCCC. 

In the final game of the day, Seward County took the lead in the first inning on a fielder's choice that scored Kase Johnson. The Saints added to their lead in the second inning with a KP Werner sacrifice fly to score Landon Anderson from third base. Jonathan Cantu scored off of an error from the Conquistadors and gave Seward County a 3-0. Wyatt Grant followed up with a three-run home run to left field that scored Richard Armijo and Kase Johnson to give the Saints a 6-0 lead.

Dodge City got on the board in the top of the third and scored two runs to cut Sewards lead down to 6-2. The Saints added another run in the third inning off of a base hit from Kase Johnson that scored Jonathan Cantu to give the Saints a 7-2 advantage. After another two-run inning in the top of the fourth inning, the Saints responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning off of a sacrifice fly from KP Werner to score Kase Johnson. With an 8-4 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Saints received insurance runs with Kase Johnson and Wyatt Grant scoring off of Conquistador errors to lead 10-4.

In the top of the ninth inning Dodge City went on to score two more runs but Seward County closed out the game with Steven Craddock receiving the save to give the Saints the win.

Dylan Day started the game and received the win with five innings pitched, three earned runs, and seven strikeouts. 

Seward County will be back in action on Thursday, April 8th to take on Barton Community College at 1 pm.
