It was another banner year in the classroom for Seward County student-athletes in 2013-2014 and 57 of those Saints and Lady Saints were rewarded on Tuesday as Athletics Director Galen McSpadden announced the Spring AD Honor Roll.

The Seward County Women’s Tennis program came out of this weekend’s ITA Awards Banquet smelling like a rose as it has been announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association that Paula Lopez has been named the ITA Rookie of the Year, Paula Coyos has been named the ITA Player to Watch, and Head Coach Jerry Thor has been named the ITA Region III Coach of the Year.

The Seward County Lady Saints 2014 tennis season came to a close Wednesday afternoon in Tyler, Texas as their final three competitors were eliminated from the NJCAA National Tournament. Paula Coyos wrapped up a phenomenal week in 3rd place in the #2 singles draw while Coyos and partner Paula Lopez paired to finish 3rd in #1 doubles, and #4 singles player Jackie Arnold finished 5th in the consolation draw.

Seward County freshman Paula Coyos is having one heck of a run at her first NJCAA National Tournament this week. Tuesday, the Argentinian rookie picked up wins at #2 singles and paired with Paula Lopez at #1 doubles for a victory to reach the final four in both brackets. After three days of the tournament, the Lady Saints are tied for 14th as a team.

After a big day one of the 2014 Region VI Tournament, the Seward County Lady Saints are knocking on the door for a return trip to the NJCAA National Tournament next week. Seward’s top two singles players and their top doubles team will play for a Region Championship Saturday while the Lady Saints need just one win in nine matches to punch their ticket to the big dance.

The Seward County Lady Saints had to wait a while to do it, but after tying the school’s all-time single season wins record with a victory over Jacksonville on April 4th, the Lady Saints snapped a four match losing streak in a big way on Saturday in Hillsboro, Kansas, knocking off Tabor 5-4 to stand alone atop the record books with their 7th team win of the season.

The Seward County Lady Saints started arguably their toughest stretch of the year on Thursday afternoon in Oklahoma City as they took on the host Seminole State Lady Trojans in a dual meet. Seward took an early 2-1 lead after doubles action, and remained up 4-3 later on when the Lady Saints Grace Golden picked up a win at #6 singles to seal the deal for Seward, giving them a 5-4 win over #18 Seminole.
