Seward Drops Third Straight

Seward Drops Third Straight

It was much closer than the previous two, but the Seward County Lady Saints fell for the third straight outing Tuesday in Wichita as Region VI rival Johnson County clipped them 5-4 to drop them back to .500 at 6-6 on the year.

Play started with doubles action and as usual, the Lady Saints took a 1-0 lead as 5th ranked Paula Lopez and Paula Coyos took care of business at #1 doubles, this time against Yazmine El Ghazi and Jessi Houman in an 8-2 decision.  Johnson bounced back to take a 2-1 lead though as the Cavaliers picked up an 8-4 win at #2 doubles and the swing match of the dual in an 8-6 win in #3 doubles.

Seward played well at the top of their singles lineup as Lopez picked up an easy win at #1 as El Ghazi was forced to retire due to injury after Lopez took an early 3-0 lead in the match.  Coyos had no trouble at #2 singles, downing Kara Hoegerl 6-1, 6-0 to give the Lady Saints the lead back and Kathryn Roohan picked up a big win for Seward at #3 singles, beating Jessi Houman 7-5, 6-2 to put Seward up 4-2.  But once again, the bottom of the Seward lineup struggled to score points and Johnson County was able to close the match by winning the final three spots on the singles side to come from behind to win the match 5-4.

Seward drops their third straight match to fall to 6-6 on the year and the Lady Saints finish their Jayhawk West regular season schedule at 1-2.

The Lady Saints will continue a busy schedule on Saturday when they travel to Hillsboro to take on Bethany and Tabor in a pair of duals.
