The Lady Saints fall on sophomore night 69-54 to Hutchinson

LIBERAL, Kan. - Seward County Community College fell short to Hutchinson Community College 69-54 on Wednesday night. The Lady Saints honored their sophomores Bri Linear, Halima Salat, D'Arrah Allen, and De'Shawnti Thomas in their last regular season home game. Seward County is now 14-15 on the season and sixth in the KJCCC with a 12-11 conference record.

Halima Salat led Seward County with 16 points, four rebounds, and two steals. De'Shawnti Thomas provided 13 points, and D'Arrah Allen added 12 of her own. 

To start the game, the Lady Saints led 6-3 after a field goal by Tiana Winn with six minutes left in the first quarter. De'Shawnti Thomas gave Seward County their largest contest lead, 10-5, with a layup under five minutes in the quarter. The Blue Dragons went on a 6-2, but the Lady Saints led 12-11 at the end of the opening quarter. 

In the second quarter, the Blue Dragons started on a 12-0 run to take a double-digit lead of 23-12 over the Lady Saints. Salat connected on a field goal from the top of the key to cut the Hutchinson lead down to single digits, 27-19. The Lady Saints could not get any closer before halftime as Seward County went into the locker room down 33-21.

The third quarter started with the Lady Saints cutting the lead down to nine points, 35-26, after an Allen three in the first minute. At the media timeout, Seward County trailed Hutchinson 40-28 after a pair of Blue Dragon free throws. The Lady Saints went into the fourth quarter down 50-30 to the Blue Dragons.

Hutchinson took their largest lead of the game at 54-30 after a putback layup with nine minutes left in the contest. Seward County went on a 9-2 run to trail Hutchinson 56-39 halfway through the quarter. A three by Salat cut the Blue Dragons' lead down to 16 points, 61-45, as the Lady Saints looked to battle back.

This started a 12-4 Seward County run and cut the Hutchinson lead down to 65-54 in the final minute of action. Seward County fell short at home 69-54 to Hutchinson on Wednesday night.

The Lady Saints will take on Coffeyville Community College in their final regular season game on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT.
