Lady Saints defeat Allen to open the 2021 season

LIBERAL, Kan. - Seward County Community College women's basketball earns their first win of the season with a 95-39 victory over Allen Community College on Wednesday night. The Lady Saints have been waiting for a long time to get back on the court and they came out with a vengeance. 

The Lady Saints trailed to start the game 2-0 but that would be the last lead for the Red Devils. Seward County applied a full-court press that created a lot of easy shot opportunities. They went on a 22-2 run to close out the first quarter and the Lady Saints took full control of the game. Seward County shot just 31% from the field in the first half but went into the locker room with a 44-14 lead. Allen shot just five of 14 from the field in the first half and two of six from behind the three-point line. Seward County's defense was on full display and continued their pressure in the second half.

In the second half, the Lady Saints furthered their lead and took a 63-20 point advantage with two minutes left in the third quarter. In the second half, Seward County shot 43.5% from the field and shot 37% for the game. Their defense provided 27 steals that led to 59 points off of turnovers in which they forced 51 turnovers. The sophomore Sierra Lynch led the team with 4 steals in the contest. 

The game leading scorer was sophomore Sierra Morrow with 18 points, seven rebounds, and had a game-high four blocks. Right behind Morrow in scoring was Zhane Thompson with 17 points, Sydney Wetlaufer and Lynch both added eight points of their own.

The Red Devils were led by Adji Mbaye with 13 points and seven rebounds. The other top scorers for Allen were Kaitlin Moore with seven points and Hallie Reed with six points in the game.

Seward County improves to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Their next opponent will be the 2-1 (0-1) Cowley College Tiger's in the Greenhouse on Saturday (January 30th, 2021) at 2 PM.
