Coach Wynn Lives Up To His Name In Historic Win Over Neosho

CHANUTE, Kan. – It was an historic evening in Panther Gymnasium for the No. 16 Seward County Lady Saints basketball team, as Head Coach Toby Wynn moved into 5^th place on the all-time wins list in Region VI history, defeating Neosho County 89-70. The marked his 327^th career-win, passing Linda Hargrove of Cowley.

Not to be outdone was Mollie Mounsey who reached the 900 career-point plateau with her 35-point performance. The 35 points is tied for the 10^th most points in a single game for Lady Saints.

Seward (9-2, 7-2) jumped out to an early 6-2 lead after three different Lady Saints got involved. Following a brief 6-0 run by the Panthers, Mounsey jumped started a 12-0 run by the Lady Saints, putting them up 18-8. The teams traded points for the remainder of the first quarter until they took a 24-13 lead into the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Saints started where they left off in the second quarter, going on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 32-13 with a Mounsey three. After trading points for much of the second quarter, the Panthers trimmed the lead to 15 by ending the on an 8-3 run, making the score 46-31 at the half.

Seward shot 45.5 percent from the field in the first half, while shooting 54.5 percent from behind the arc.  As seems to be the trend the Lady Saints go on the road, the Panthers couldn't miss, hitting 56.7 percent from the floor and 40 percent from deep.

The Panthers started the third quarter on a 9-4 run, cutting the Seward lead to 10 points. The Lady Saints extended their lead back to 16 with free throws from Mounsey and two layups by Amy Scott. Once again, the Panthers answered, cutting the lead back down to 11, keeping the game within reach. However, Seward ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to push the lead back to 16 at the end of the third quarter, with the score 65-49.

The Lady Saints started the third quarter on a 16-5 run for their largest lead of the game at 79-54. The lead was enough for Seward to coast the rest of the way, winning 89-70.

Seward shot 52.5 percent from the floor, going 31 for 59.  Their 19-point victory is even more impressive as Neosho shot 48 percent from the floor and 62.5 percent from behind the arc. The Lady Saints outrebounded the Panthers 28-24 on the day.

Along with Mounsey's 35 points, Silvia Veloso (11 pts) and Carla Covane (10 pts) also scored in the double-digits. Veloso also finished with 8 rebounds and a career-high 5 steals. Seward finished with 19 steals as a team, while forcing Neosho to commit 32 turnovers. 

The Lady Saints will return to non-conference play for the next two games, traveling to Scottsdale, Arizona to take on Scottsdale Community College on Dec. 28 and Mesa Community College on Dec. 29. Conference play will pick back up after New Year's on Jan 3 against Pratt in the Greenhouse.
