Preview: No. 8 Lady Saints Travel East To Take on Red Ravens

COFFEYVILLE, Kan. – The No. 8 Seward County women's basketball team will travel to Coffeyville on Saturday for a matchup against the Red Ravens at 2:00 p.m. inside Nellis Hall Gymnasium.

The Lady Saints (7-1, 5-1) finished their two-game homestand on Wednesday, defeating the Cowley Lady Tigers 75-56.  Four Lady Saints finished the game in double-figures – Mollie Mounsey (19 pts), Silvia Veloso (16 pts), Lexi Hernandez (12 pts) and Vilma Covane (11 pts).  Mounsey's 19 points pushed her over the 800-career mark as she now sits at 818 career points.

Seward couldn't miss, hitting over half the shots they took, finishing at 53.6 percent from the field.  The win also marked the 325th career win for head coach Toby Wynn, now just 93 wins shy of tying Jim Littell's mark for most wins in Seward County history.

One area they continue to struggle in is free throws, as they currently are last in the conference, hitting just 57.4 percent from the charity stripe on the season.  Mounsey leads the team in scoring and is second in the KJCCC in points per game (17.6).  V. Covane and Vanessa Caro also rank in the top five of offensive categories in the conference. V. Covane ranks 2nd in field goal percentage (.620) and Van. Caro ranks 3rd in three-point percentage (.436).

Coffeyville (5-5, 3-3) broke a two-game losing streak on Wednesday, defeating Pratt 65-61.  Sophomore Guard Sky Jasper leads the Red Ravens offense with 11.2 points/game, while freshman guard Nalon Smith comes in just under ten points, averaging 9.7 points/game.

The Red Ravens hit only 4.3 three-pointers per game, while hitting 27.6 percent of their attempts.  The Lady Saints have held their past two opponents under their scoring average, and will look to do the same against Coffeyville, as the Red Ravens average 61.5 points/game.

Seward has won three in a row against the Red Ravens, including last year's 83-76 victory in Nellis Hall.  The Lady Saints have only lost one regular season game to Coffeyville, a 71-68 loss in 2007.  The Red Ravens last victory came in the 2015 Region VI Tournament, where Coffeyville won 78-75.  The Lady Saints hold a 16-2 all-time record against the Red Ravens.

The game will be streamed on Coffeyville's YouTube channel and can be heard on 107.5 KSCB as Brock Kappelmann (pxp) is on the call.
