Preview: No. 8 Lady Saints look to slow down undefeated Cowley

LIBERAL, Kan. – The No. 8 Seward County women's basketball team will finish a two-game homestand tomorrow (Nov. 29) at 6:00 p.m. when they will host the Cowley Tigers inside the Greenhouse.

The Lady Saints (6-1, 4-1) bounced back from their first defeat of the season, an 89-80 loss to Barton, by defeating the Pratt Beavers 81-32. Three Lady Saints finished in double figures, led by Mollie Mounsey's 19-point performance. Lexi Hernandez (12 points) and Vilma Covane (12 points) were the other two to reach double-digit points.

The win against the Beavers marked the 50th straight victory for the Lady Saints over Pratt.  The 32 points given up were the least amount of points allowed since 2011.  The Lady Saints shot 48.5 percent from the field, while holding the Beavers to just 18.8 percent.

The Lady Saints are led by Mounsey, who averages 17.4 points/game so far this season.  In her career, she has scored at least 10 points in 41 straight games.  Vanessa Caro has been a force off the bench, averaging 9.3 points/game while shooting 42 percent from the floor.

On the defensive end, Silvia Veloso has proven to have quick hands, leading the team with 2.9 steals/game, while Mounsey adds 2.6 steals/game.  Carla Covane and Velso are tied for the team lead with 5 rebounds/game.  The Lady Saints outscore opponents by 20.4 points/game.

The Tigers (9-0, 5-0) come into the game as one of two teams with an undefeated conference record.  They are coming off a 65-56 win over Barton.  Scoring has not been an issue for Cowley this season, as they average 81.2 points/game.

Sophomore guard Kaitlyn Potter leads the Tigers attack with 25.2 points/game, while freshman center Brenda Silva also averages double-figures with 13.4 points/game. Sophomore forward Samantha Schwab is a force on the glass, averaging 8.9 rebounds/game, while adding 8.4 points/game.

Seward has won two in a row against Cowley, sweeping last year's series.  Their last loss came in the 2016 Region VI Championship, losing to the Tigers 67-57 in Park City.  Their last regular season loss came in December 2015, when the Tigers defeated the Lady Saints 74-61 in Arkansas City. Seward leads the all-time series 15-7.
