Lady Saints Defense Stifles Fort Carson

Lady Saints Defense Stifles Fort Carson

Facing a Fort Carson team already with wins over a pair of NJCAA Division I opponents this season, the #8 Seward County Lady Saints knew they would have to get after it Friday night as they opened up the Billy's/Days Inn Classic in the Greenhouse with the Lady Lions.  Get after it they did, allowing just a single field goal to the Lady Lions in the first and third quarters, and two in the fourth to come away with a dominating 93-26 victory to improve to 6-1 on the season.

The Lady Saints got it going early and often against Fort Carson on Friday, jumping out to an 8-0 lead as Joanna Grymek and Clitan de Sousa dominated the paint against the Lions.  They didn't stop there, scoring the final 20 points of the first quarter, closed out by seven straight Grymek points to take a 28-2 lead after 10 minutes of play.

Fort Carson finally got something going as the second period got under way, but the Lions still had no answer in the paint for Seward.  Grymek scored six more for Seward to take a 40-9 lead and an offensive rebound and putback for Manuela Fungate late in the period gave the Lady Saints a 48-19 at the break.

As they did in the first quarter, the Lady Saints were all over the Lady Lions early in the third.  Seward scored 10 points in the first four minutes, again aided by Grymek's power in the paint, to extend their lead to 58-19.  Seward went on to score the first 18 points of the second half, before mercifully, Fort Carson found the basket with 3:44 to go in the third quarter for their first points of the period.  The Lady Saints ended up outscoring Fort Carson 26-2 in the quarter, giving themselves a nice 74-21 cushion after three quarters of play.

Grymek added to her big night early in the fourth quarter, scoring the first four points of the period to push the Lady Saints advantage to 78-21.  Fort Carson's first field goal of the fourth quarter came past the halfway mark at 4:56 with the score 84-21 and the Lady Saints only allowed one more Lion bucket in the final five minutes of the contest to run away with a 93-26 victory.

The Lady Saints finished the game shooting an even 50% from the floor while holding Fort Carson to just 17% shooting on the night.  Seward owned the glass in the win, outrebounding the Lions 68-33 including 23 offensive boards.  The Lady Saints dominated the inside in the victory, outscoring Fort Carson 56-8 in the paint while also holding a 35-3 advantage in bench points in the win.

Individually Grymek paced Seward with a monster contest, finishing with 28 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocked shots, each game highs.  Daniela Galindo and Neidy Ocuane each scored 12 for Seward while Fungate scored 10 off the bench.

Seward improves to 6-1 on the year while Fort Carson drops to 2-3 against NJCAA competition.

The Lady Saints will play their final non-conference contest before Jayhawk Conference action begins on Saturday night when they take on Frank Phillips at 6:00 to wrap up the Billy's/Days Inn Classic.  The Lady Plainsmen dropped a 78-53 contest to Hutchinson in Friday's early game.
