Comeback Kids Net Huge OT Win at Weatherford

The #20 Seward County Lady Saints picked up an early season signature win Thursday night in Weatherford, Texas, coming back from 16 down to start the game and later 5 down in overtime to defeat Weatherford 90-88 to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Things started about as bad as they could for the Lady Saints Thursday night as five minutes into the game they trailed by a whopping 20-4 score.  Seward slowly worked their way back into the game, cutting the Weatherford lead to 27-16 at the midway point of the first half and drawing to within six at 32-26 with just under seven minutes left in the half.  As Tamara Seda and Brooklyn Artis began to heat up for Seward, the Lady Saints climbed to within one at the 4:00 mark and took their first lead of the night at 40-39 with 2:45 left in the first.  After being down 16 to start the game, the Lady Saints carried a 44-43 lead into the break at half.

Neither side was able to gain traction early in the second half and the game was tied at 48 four minutes in.  Seward took the lead back at 54-52 at the 14:00 mark, but Weatherford regained the lead 63-62 with just under ten minutes to go.  The Lady Saints and Lady Coyotes went back and forth for the next eight minutes and Seward held a one point, 76-75 lead with just 2:30 remaining in regulation.  Seward went without a point for the next 2:05 and Weatherford cashed in a bucket to go in front 79-76 with under 20 seconds to go in the game.  The Lady Saints scored, got a stop, and Artis sunk a free throw with 7.6 seconds remaining to tie the game at 79 and that is the way regulation ended as the two teams went to overtime knotted at 79.

The Lady Saints went down by five early in overtime before cutting the Weatherford lead to 84-81 with 2:30 remaining in the first overtime.  Seward got three straight stops and got a key three from Rebekah Hatchard to go back on top 86-85 with 43 seconds left.  The Lady Saints sunk a pair of free throws to extend their lead to three and after a Weatherford basket with 7 seconds left, it was 89-88 Seward.  The Lady Saints were fouled and made one of two free throw attempts to go up 90-88 and withstood one last attempt by the Coyotes to bring home the win by the final score of 90-88.

After starting the season shooting just 2 for 11 from the field with 6 points in the Lady Saints first two games of the season, redshirt freshman Brooklyn Artis went off for the Lady Saints in the win, scoring a career high 34 points while knocking down 11 big free throws in the contest.  Tamara Seda backed up a huge 23 point, 18 rebound effort with 18 points in the win over the Coyotes while reigning Jayhawk West Player of the Week Kyndal Davis scored 14 and Rebekah Hatchard had 13 for Seward.

The #20 Lady Saints improve to 3-0 on the season while Weatherford, who finished 2014 with a 21-4 record, drops to 1-1 after their second game in a back to back.

Seward will have some time to enjoy the win as they have the next eight days off before hitting the court once again in the Greenhouse on November 14th and 15th when they host the 2014 Billy's/Days Inn Classic where they will take on South Plains and Midland in two 6:00 PM tips.
