Saints Split With Top 10 Opponents

The #5 Seward County Saints began a tough weekend of competition after a long road trip to Pensacola, Florida on Friday, splitting matches with #2 ASA and #10 Eastern Florida to move to 9-2 on the year. 

 

The Saints battled 2nd ranked ASA Miami in their first match of the day.  The premier matchup in doubles came at the top spot where #1 ranked Carlos Anez and Ondrej Nice represented Seward against #3 Eric Gomez and Mario Mendoza for the Silver Storm.  Anez and Nice took the lead early and never looked back, picking up a dominating 8-3 win for the Saints only point in doubles action.  The Saints had some troubles in singles action against the potent ASA Miami lineup with the Silver Storm sweeping each of the spots from two to six in straight sets to clinch the match.  Seward's only singles point came at the #1 spot where again Anez came up big, downing 7th ranked Mendoza in come from behind fashion 4-6, 7-6, 6-1 to wrap up the match with a 7-2 ASA win. 

 

#5 SEWARD COUNTY/#2 ASA MIAMI BOX SCORE

 

Things didn't get a lot easier for the Saints in their second dual of the day as they battled #10 Eastern Florida State.  Seward got off to a big start in doubles play, sweeping through each of the three spots for a 3-0 lead.  Anez and Nice knocked off their opponents 8-3 at the #1 spot while Gabriel Nery and Alex Mosehle earned a point with a tight 9-7 win at #2 and Duro Opacic and Przemek Zielinski wrapped things up with an 8-5 win at #3 for the Saints. 

 

Seward's strong play continued right into singles where Anez earned a three set win over 10th ranked Samir Shikhoui at #1 and Opacic picked up a straight set win at #2 to seal the match for the Saints.  They kept plugging as Claudio Quinones won 6-4, 7-6 over 43rd ranked Eduardo Garcia at #5 and Nery earned a 6-2 6-1 win at #6 to give Seward a 7-2 victory.

Seward moves to 9-2 on the year with the split and will continue action in the Sunshine State on Saturday when they battle #4 Abraham Baldwin and #9 Harford to wrap up their trip.
