16 Seward Student-Athletes Honored in Record NJCAA Academic Award Class

If classroom performance is any judge of it, there are going to be a record number of former NJCAA student-athletes making their mark on the working world in two years as the NJCAA announced on Wednesday that a record 2,026 athletes, including 16 Seward County Saints and Lady Saints from six different teams have earned NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards, formerly known as the NJCAA’s Academic All-American award.

Following the deepest run at the NJCAA National Tournament in program history, Seward County Freshman Tare Mariga has been named the first NJCAA All-American in Saints Tennis program history.

The Seward County Saints Men’s Tennis team wrapped up its best season in school history on Saturday, winning a pair of consolation bracket championships, and collecting a national runner-up medal to finish the NJCAA National Tournament with 23 points to finish 8th, their best finish in program history.

The Seward County Saints continued their assent up the leaderboard at the 2015 NJCAA National Tournament on Thursday, moving into 9th place overall as Ronzai Saurombe won the #1 singles consolation bracket and fellow countryman Tare Mariga took care of business in his #5 singles semifinal to advance to Friday’s National Championship tilt.

With constant rain hammering down on the Dallas Metroplex, the Seward County Saints were able to get just three matches in on day three of the 2015 NJCAA National Tournament in the Lone Star State on Wednesday. Seward will send Tare Mariga and Paul Arslanian through the semifinals on Thursday, posting a 2-1 record to remain in 10th place overall at the end of the day.

Day two at the NJCAA National Tournament in Plano, Texas was much more enjoyable than day one for the Seward County Saints Men’s Tennis team as the guys in green rose from 17th place into the top 10 in the team standings.

It was not the opening day that the Seward County Saints Men’s Tennis team had dreamed about all year long Monday in Plano, Texas at the 2015 NJCAA National Tournament. On day one of the week long tournament the Saints managed just four points, seeing their top three players all eliminated from the championship bracket, as they sat in 17th place at days end.

Three Seward County Tennis players signed on the dotted line Thursday afternoon in the All-American Room at SCCC marking one of the biggest signing days for the Seward tennis program. Ronzai Saurombe signed to play at Gonzaga next season while doubles partners Paula Lopez and Paula Coyos will play together once again at West Florida.

It has been a record breaking year for the 3rd ranked Seward County Saints in 2015 and Thursday at home on the Campus Tennis Courts, they set another all-time mark, picking up their 9th win of the season in a 9-0 drubbing of visiting Hesston, marking the most wins in a single season in school history.

It looked like the 3rd ranked Seward County Saints were back on the right track after a pair of big wins over top 15 ranked opponents on Friday at the Seminole State Dual Match Classic, but after Saturday’s action, it was back to the drawing board for the guys in green as Seward fell 9-0 to the team one spot ahead of them in the rankings, Tyler, and dropped a 5-4 decision to #7 Seminole to fall to 8-3 on the year.

The 3rd ranked Seward County Saints and the 4th ranked Cowley Tigers hooked up Saturday morning in Arkansas City, Kansas in an epic match between two NJCAA National Championship contenders. The match lived up to its billing as the Saints and Tigers battled it out in nine solid matches in what could end up being a preview of the Region VI Championships with Cowley eventually coming out on top 6-3.
