No. 9 Volleyball welcomes Dodge City to the Greenhouse
LIBERAL, Kan. – The No. 9 Seward County volleyball team will be back in the Greenhouse Wednesday night (Sep. 13) when the Lady Saints host Dodge City (8-5, 1-2) at 6:30 p.m. With their 11th win, Seward County (11-0, 3-0) is off to their best start in the digital era (2004).
The Lady Saints have won the past six matches by sweeping their opponent. Cloud County was the latest victim to fall in consecutive sets, as the Lady Saints defeated them on Monday, 25-13, 25-18, 25-15.
Against Cloud County, the Lady Saints had their highest kill percentage of the season, connecting on .487 of their attempts. Freshman Giovanna Tapigliani led the team with 12 kills and 15.5 total points. Three others, Giovanna Kutnze (10.0), Mariana Nascimento (11.0) and Luz Sierra (10.5) scored in the double-digits.
For the year, Viviane Viana averages a team high 3.40 kill/set. Tapigliani checks in at 3.22 kills/set, Nascimento averages 2.54 kills/set, and Sierra averages 2.38 kills/set. Kuntze leads the KJCCC in assists per set, averaging 10.65 assists/set.
Defensively, Nathiellen Machado (4.22 digs/set) and Briana Domino (3.39 digs/set) lead the Lady Saints in digs, while Sierra ranks second in the KJCCC in blocks per set with 1.34.
Dodge City comes into the match coming off a win against Pratt in consecutive sets 25-18, 25-21, 25-15. They are 8-5 overall and 1-2 in Jayhawk West play. On the year, the Conqs are led on offense by Rachel Slattery (2.53 kills/set), Jaylen Peques (2.34 kills/set) and Raquel Valdez (2.04 kills/set). Valdez (1.38 blocks/set) and Slattery (1.02 blocks/set) also lead a Dodge City defense which ranks 10th in the nation in total blocks.
The Lady Saints are 27-3 against Dodge City all-time and have won ten straight, dating back to 2012. Seward swept the Conqs in all three matches they played a season ago.
