Lady Saints Earn Six Points on Day One of Nationals

After one day of competition at the NJCAA National Tournament in Tucson, Arizona the Seward County Lady Saints sit in a tie for 14th place in the tournament standings with six day one points.

Xochitl Gonzalez was the first player to step on the court for Seward at the 2015 National Tournament as she went up against Broward's Natalie Hernandez in #5 singles.  Gonzalez struggled in the first set, losing 6-1 but came back fighting in the second, staying close to 8th seeded Hernandez before eventually falling 6-4.

In #4 singles Seward's Naomie Bukassa pulled the upset of the early tournament, knocking off 7th seeded Claudia Maka of Moraine Valley 6-1, 6-4 to pick up two points for the Lady Saints and move into the quarterfinal round.

Kellyn Peters took the court for Seward in #3 singles, going up against Cassidy McWhorter of Eastern Arizona in the 1st round.  Peters battled McWhorter in the first set, winning 6-4 and was on a roll in the second, easily winning 6-1 to get another two points for the Lady Saints while she moved to the round of 16.

In doubles action, the first Seward duo to take the court was Grace Golden and Naomie Bukassa at #3.  The pair fought hard in their first set against Trask/Whitehead of Abraham Baldwin, but couldn't hang on in the end, losing 6-4.  In the second they couldn't get the momentum back, falling 6-1 to drop to end their run at the tournament.

In #2 doubles it was a regular season rematch between Peters/Gonzalez for Seward and Longoria/Hernandez of Jacksonville.  Oh what a difference a month made as after losing to the Jaguars in quite decisive fashion 8-1 during the regular season, Peters/Gonzalez hammers the Jags pair on Saturday, winning 6-0, 6-0 to pick up Seward's first doubles points of the tournament.

That was all the action for Seward on day one of the tournament as they sat 14th out of 27 teams in the tournament.  Seward's 6 points tied them with Barton, Eastern Arizona, Lewis & Clark, Mesa, and Snead State while Pima led the way with 18.
