16 Seward Student-Athletes Honored in Record NJCAA Academic Award Class

If classroom performance is any judge of it, there are going to be a record number of former NJCAA student-athletes making their mark on the working world in two years as the NJCAA announced on Wednesday that a record 2,026 athletes, including 16 Seward County Saints and Lady Saints from six different teams have earned NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards, formerly known as the NJCAA’s Academic All-American award.

Seward County Lady Saints Head Coach Toby Wynn has announced the dates and times for his 2015 Lady Saints Fundamentals Camp. Wynn invites children entering grades 2-5 to the Greenhouse for morning sessions June 15-17 from 8:30-10:30 with children entering grades 6-8 going in session number two from 10:30-12:30. Cost for the camp is $40 which includes six hours of instruction plus a free camp t-shirt. Those interested in attending can fill out the attached WAIVER FORM and return it to Toby Wynn at PO Box 1137 in Liberal.

Following a 28-6 season that saw them finish in the Sweet 16 at the NJCAA National Tournament, four Seward County Lady Saint sophomores signed their National Letter of Intents to move on and play at the four year level next year Monday afternoon in a ceremony in Seward’s All-American Room. Kyndal Davis is on her way to the University of Wyoming, Rebekah Hatchard will play at Montana State University, Brooklyn Artis will attend Indiana State University, and Jasmine Jordan will remain close to Liberal at Oklahoma Panhandle State University.

It was a night to celebrate in the Greenhouse on Friday as three of the greatest Seward County Saints and Lady Saints to ever put on a uniform were inducted into the Saints Athletics Hall of Fame. The top two scorers and rebounders in Lady Saints Basketball history, Tegan Cunningham and Jamie Talbert, joined the leading hitter in Saints baseball history, Tim Forkner, as the Class of 2015.

After a very successful season that eventually ended in the Sweet 16 of the NJCAA National Tournament, the Seward County Lady Saints had a school record four players named to the NJCAA All-Region VI Team on Thursday. Kyndal Davis was a 1st Team selection for Seward while Tamara Seda was a 2nd Team pick and Brooklyn Artis and Axelle Bernard were Honorable Mention choices by the coaches.

The Seward County Lady Saints reached the NJCAA National Tournament Sweet 16 on Tuesday night in Salina, Kansas but the party quickly turned to heartbreak as the gals in green fell 53-47 to Walters State in a game that was dominated by defense on both sides.

The Seward County women’s basketball program has played in their fair share of NJCAA National Tournament games in Salina’s Bicentennial Center, but none, have ended the way the Lady Saints opening round game Monday night did. In their first round matchup with North Dakota’s Lake Region State, Seward got a career high 30 points from sophomore Kyndal Davis, leading the way to an 89-57 win, marking their largest margin of victory in Lady Saints program history at the Big Dance.

Lake Region State College from Devil’s Lake, North Dakota will be the Seward County Lady Saints 1st round opponent at next week’s NJCAA National Tournament in Salina, Kansas. As released by the NJCAA on Monday, the Lady Saints and Lady Royals draw the 4:30 PM game on the opening day of the tournament in the Bicentennial Center. Seward will enter the tournament as the #12 seed while Lake Region enters as the #21 seed.

The #9 Seward County Lady Saints run in the NJCAA Region VI Tournament came to an end on Friday in Koch Arena in Wichita as despite the Lady Saints erasing a 19 point second half deficit, Coffeyville outlasted Seward 78-75 to advance to their first NJCAA National Tournament since 1998 while leaving it up to the at-large selection committee in deciding whether Seward should be in the Big Dance as well or not.

The #7 Seward County Lady Saints put on a second half clinic Saturday night in the Greenhouse in the 1st Round of the 2015 Region VI Tournament. Unfortunately for the visiting Neosho County Panthers, the clinic came at their expense as Seward exploded for 61 second half points in a blowout 108-49 victory that saw a number of all-time records and career highs fall for the Lady Saints.

Unfortunately for #7 Seward, the shots were not falling Saturday night in the Greenhouse on Sophomore Night in Liberal as Seward found themselves playing catch up all night, before eventually falling 68-61 to Butler, giving the Lady Grizzlies their first win over the Lady Saints in the Greenhouse since the 1995 season.

Playing in the building where they picked up arguably their best win of the 2014-2015 season over #4 New Mexico earlier this year, the #7 Seward County Lady Saints took the court Wednesday in the Perryman Center in Garden City to take on the rival Lady Busters. It didn’t take long for Seward to catch fire as the Lady Saints jumped out to a 23-5 lead against Garden on the Busters Sophomore Night and never looked back, cruising to an 80-61 win to earn their 25th win of the season.
