Seward County loses in doubleheader at No. 4 Butler

EL DORADO, Kan. - The Seward County Community College softball team falls at Butler Community College with a 10-5 loss in game one followed by an 11-2 final in game two. The Saints were unable to upset the No. 4 Grizzlies on the road but continued to fight with the best team in the Jayhawk East. Seward County is now 10-12 on the season and sits in third place in the Jayhawk West with a 9-7 conference record. 

To start the day, Butler scored a run in the bottom of the first inning and followed up in the second inning with one more to lead 2-0. Seward County got their bats going in the top of the fourth with a two-run home run from Ashley Low, her fourth home run of the season to tie the game at 2-2. The Saints had back-to-back solo home runs from Ayanna Clemons and Alyssah Pontoja to take their first lead of the game 4-2.

The Grizzlies responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead at 6-4. Macy Cesa-Spearman was able to score in the top of the fifth off of a Butler error and Seward trailed 6-5 in the fifth inning. The Grizzlies scored four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the 10-5 lead and Seward county was unable to answer in the bottom of the seventh. 

Alyssah Pontoja picked up the loss from the circle with six innings pitched with six earned runs on nine hits, and she is now 7-4 on the season.

For the final game of the day, Seward County trailed 4-0 after the first inning and Butler added two more runs in the second to lead 6-0. The Saints were able to get on the board with an RBI single from Jacie Scott to score AJ Luna in the third inning. Butler extended their lead with a run in the fourth inning and one more run in the fifth to take an 8-1 lead going into the sixth inning. 

Seward County was able to score Jacie Scott from third base on a fielder's choice to trail Butler 8-2 in the sixth. The Grizzles came around to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the game on the run rule. 

Ireland Caro picked up the loss from the circle with four and two-thirds innings pitched with three earned runs on eight hits. Hannah Schulman came in for the fifth and sixth innings and gave up four runs on three hits.

Seward County will be back in action on Thursday, April 15th at Hutchinson Community College with the first game at 3 pm.
