2020 Softball season preview

LIBERAL, Kan.- Seward County Community College softball teams look forward to their first games of the season but will be ready whenever they get the opportunity. The Lady Saints return six sophomores to their line up from last year, which includes two 2019 All-Region Second Team members in Nissy Lechuga and Emily Mojica.

Head Coach Ryan Wondrasek enters his second season at the helm for the Lady Saints, ending the first season with an 18-31 record and 14-13 in Conference play. Last season ended with two tough losses in the Region VI tournament. In the first-round game, Seward led the first five innings, but Barton Community College came back to win the game in extra innings 5-4. In the second game, the Lady Saints took on Colby Community College and went down early 10-1 but came back in the fifth inning to get within one, the Trojans held off Seward to win 12-9.

Coach Wondrasek discussed the team's make-up for this season. "We are bringing back a lot of returners that will play key roles for us this spring and at the same time we brought in a lot of good freshmen as well that will be impactful for us." Coach Wondrasek continued, "Having a smaller group, it's tough sometimes in the depth but at the same time we are going to have a lot of production from everybody, that's 1 through 15 will have a big role."

With a smaller team, the Lady Saints do not lack depth as Seward has added freshmen this year that are looking to make in impact right away. Coach Wondrasek discussed the culture that he is instilled in his team and program. "We preach play the game, not necessarily whom we are playing but playing the best version of our game." Coach Wondrasek expanded on what that means for his team. "We are going out trying to play clean defense, we want our pitchers to throw strikes and we want quality at-bats and that's what we are going to look for early."

The Lady Saints' next scheduled game is against Lamar College on Wednesday at the French Family Field. For updates and schedule changes go to SewardSaints.com.
