Lady Saints Clinch Home Field For 1st Round Playoff

Lady Saints Clinch Home Field For 1st Round Playoff

The Seward County Lady Saints struggles late in the season continued Saturday afternoon in Dodge City as the gals in green managed only a split against a Dodge team  that had lost 9 of its last 10 games.  A slow start but a big finish propelled the Lady Saints to a 7-3 win in game one of the doubleheader while a five run 2nd inning for Dodge City in the second game led the Lady Conqs to a 14-11 win to split the doubleheader.  At the end of the day, there was some good news for the Lady Saints who are now just 3-7 in their last 10 games, as their game one win wrapped up home field advantage for Seward in the 1st round of the Region VI Tournament.

Things didn't begin well for the Lady Saints in the opener as Dodge City jumped out to a 1-0 lead before Seward recorded their first out of the game, but the gals in green responded with a run in the 3rd inning to even things up at 1.

The Lady Saints took their first lead of the day in the 4th inning as Danielle Orr doubled home a pair of runs to make it 3-1, but Dodge got a run back in the bottom of the inning to cut the Lady Saints lead to 3-2.

Seward was back on the attack in the 5th and they got it done with two outs as Grace Petersen singled to extend the inning and Hannah Clark lifted off on her first career home run to make it  a 5-2 game.

The Lady Saints extended their lead in the 6th with a two out single from Kolby Hamilton to make it 6-2 and a Dodge City error in the 7th added another run of insurance for Seward, making it a 7-2 contest.

Dodge got a single tally in their final at bat, but left two runners on and the tying run in the on deck circle as Seward squeezed the final out to come away with a 7-3 win.

Seward pounded out 14 hits in the win but did commit 4 errors on the defensive side of the ball.  Clark was the star for Seward in the victory, going 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 RBI's while Petersen was 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored.  Alexa O'Brien earned the win for Seward in the circle, going the distance and allowing just 5 hits and 1 earned run to improve to 15-11 on the year.

SEWARD COUNTY/DODGE CITY GAME ONE BOX SCORE

The Lady Saints looked like they were in good shape in game two as well as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning on a Dodge City error and a two out single from Joe Ann Rapoza after the miscue.

The lead was short lived though as the Conqs bounced back with a huge 2nd inning of their own.  A leadoff home run made it a 2-1 game and the next three hitters reached base to tie the game at 2.  Later on Dodge City got a two run single to take the lead and added one more later in the inning to open their lead to 5-2.

The Seward offense tried to keep themselves in the game, picking up another two run inning in the 2nd as Clark smacked a two out double to score a pair and make it 5-4.

But just as soon as the Lady Saints got back in it, the Conqs plated a run in the 3rd and another in the 4th to stretch their lead back to 7-4.

Seward got to within two as Kolby Hamilton tripled to lead off the Lady Saints 5th and scored on an RBI single from Vanessa Oakden, but once again the Conqs had an answer, plating two more runs in the 6th to take their biggest lead of the game at 9-5.

The middle of the Lady Saints order didn't threaten in the 7th, going down in order to wrap up the game as Dodge City won game two 9-5.

Dodge pounded out 14 hits against Seward pitching while the Lady Saints finished with 11.  Oakden, Bolanos, and Rapoza each had 2 hits while Clark drove in 2 for Seward.  Jaclyn Wagner had a rough start, failing to get out of the 2nd inning while allowing 6 hits and 5 runs to fall to 16-8 on the year.

SEWARD COUNTY/DODGE CITY GAME TWO BOX SCORE

The Lady Saints do clinch home field advantage in the 1st round of the playoffs with the split as they go to 31-21 overall and 12-8 in Jayhawk West play.  Dodge City pushes their 2015 record to 22-18 overall and 9-13 in conference action.

Seward will play its final regular season home games of the season on Monday as they host Pratt and will wrap up the regular season on the road Wednesday at Colby.
