Seward Stymied by #11 Midwestern
The Seward County Saints lost their third straight match Friday afternoon in Wichita Falls, Texas, dropping a 6-1 decision to Division II #11 Midwestern State to fall to 13-5 on the year.
The Mustangs took the first point of the day at #1 doubles, securing an 8-2 win over the Saints duo of Przemek Zielinski and Tare Mariga, playing together for just the second time this season. The Saints evened the match, picking up an 8-4 win at #2 behind Carlos Anez and Ondrej Nice, but Midwestern took the lead back 2-1 after a hard fought 9-7 win at #3 over Ngoni Makambwa and Alex Mosehle.
Needing a comeback to try to pick up the win, the Saints got off to a rough start in singles play, as Ramon Toyos took down Zielinski 6-2, 6-4 and Dillon Pineda downed Nice 6-4, 7-5 to put the Mustangs within one point of the win as they took a 4-1 lead. Chris Norrie knocked off Mosehle 6-1, 7-5 at #3 to clinch the win for Midwestern and for style, the Mustangs finished off a three set win at #1 to end the match with a 6-1 victory. Seward trailed the match at #5 singles and led at #6 singles, but the matches were unfinished as Midwestern already clinched.
The Saints drop their third straight match and fifth in their past six to fall to 13-5 on the year while Midwestern remains red hot, winning their sixth straight to improve to 12-4.
The Saints road won't get any easier as they take on #12 Cameron Saturday in Wichita Falls to wrap up their Texas two-step.
