Seward County defeats Hutchinson 3-1 in the home opener

LIBERAL, Kan. - The No. 16 ranked Seward County Community College upset the No. 13 ranked Hutchinson Community College 3-1 in the home opener in the Greenhouse. The Lady Saints lost the first set 25-22 but won three straight 25-19, 27-25, 25-20 to improve to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the KJCCC. Seward County will travel to McCook, Nebraska, for four matches starting on Friday against Otero Junior College at 9 AM. 

Seward County started the match by scoring the first two points as Saints nation cheered them on. Both teams exchanged leads early, but the Blue Dragons took a 12-9 lead. After a Hutchinson 7-4 run, Seward County trailed 19-13 but battled back with a 7-1 run to tie it at 20 a piece. Seward County could not get back in front as Hutchinson won the first set 25-22.

In the second set, Seward County trailed 5-3 but went on a 5-0 run to take the lead 8-5. The Lady Saints did not look back as they continued to add to their lead with an 18-11 lead late in the second set. Seward County continued to battle as the Blue Dragons stormed back within two points, 20-18, but the Lady Saints ended the second set on a 5-1 run to even the match at a set a piece. 

 

The Lady Saints trailed in the first set early 9-3 to the Blue Dragons but returned to win the third set 25-20. With a 2-1 match lead over Hutchinsons, Seward County switched sides and looked to close the match.

Early in the fourth set, both teams exchanged points to be tied at 3-3, but the Lady Saints took the first lead at 6-3. Seward County and Hutchinson exchanged points, and the Lady Saints led 20-19 late in the set. Malena Catala served three aces to give Seward County a 24-19 lead. The Lady Saints finished the set on a 5-1 run to win the set and the match over 3-1 over Hutchinson.

They will travel to McCook this weekend for four matches starting on Friday versus Otero at 9 AM.
