Seward Sweeps Threshers in 2017 Home Debut
The #5 Seward County Lady Saints opened up their 2017 home schedule with a 9-0 win Saturday afternoon at Blue Bonnet Courts in Liberal, sweeping past the visiting Bethel Threshers to improve to 4-1 on the year.
Doubles play was first and the Lady Saints began their solid day there. Sarah Manseri and Steffany Bermudez teamed for an 8-2 win at #1 while Fernanda Santana and Martina Borges combined for an 8-1 win at #3 to give Seward a quick 2-0 lead. The last doubles match on was at #2 where Madison Hoelting and Tadi Mrewa finished off Jen Harrison and Breane Rogers 8-3 to give Seward a 3-0 lead into singles action.
Only one of the singles matches was close as Manseri dialed up a 6-2, 6-2 win at #1 and Lisa Suzuki took a 6-0, 6-2 decision at #2 over Serena Wong to clinch the match for Seward. Mrewa and Santana dropped just a single game between them at #3 and #4 to make it 7-0 Lady Saints and Hoelting cruised 6-1, 6-2 to push the Seward lead to 8-0. The final match on was at #5 singles where Borges battled Harrison to a third set tiebreak, eventually outlasting her 10-4 in the breaker to wrap up the sweep for Seward 9-0.
The Lady Saints improve to 4-1 on the year with the win and will return to the courts next weekend in Midlothian, Texas where they will take on four straight ranked foes Friday and Saturday in the Lone Star State.
