Lady Saints defeat the Pirates 71-62 on the road

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - Seward County Community College wins their second straight conference game at Independence Community College 71-62 on Saturday, December 3rd. The Lady Saints jumped to a 20-7 after the first quarter and kept the lead for the remainder of the contest. Seward County improved to 4-4 in the year and 4-2 in the KJCCC. 

D'Arrah Allen led the Lady Saints with 18 points, five rebounds, and three steals. De'Shawnti ThomasHalima Salat, and Kylee Hunt all added 11 points of their own in their starting roles. 

The Lady Saints started the first quarter on a 12-2 run after a three by Halima Salat, and the Pirates had to use a timeout at the 4:38 mark. Seward County continued to create separation with a 20-6 advantage after a pair of free throws by Keanna Coburn. After the first quarter, Seward County had a 20-7 lead over Independence, and their defense continued to create their offense. 

Seward County took their largest game lead with a 27-7 lead after a three by D'Arrah Allen with eight minutes left in the second quarter. The Pirates responded with an 8-3 run to cut the Lady Saints' lead down to 30-15, but Seward County went on a 6-0 run to take a 36-15 advantage. To close out the second quarter, Independence went on an 11-3 run to cut Seward County's lead down to 13 points, 36-26 at halftime.

De'Shawnti Thomas started the third quarter with a three as the Lady Saints grew their lead to 42-26 over the Pirates with 9:24 left in the quarter. At the halfway point of the quarter, Alianna Colon knocked down a three-pointer to put Seward County up 53-38 and continued to hold the lead they accumulated from the first quarter. The Lady Saints ended the third quarter with a 61-46 lead as they entered the final ten minutes of the contest. 

With a free throw early in the fourth quarter, the Pirates cut the Lady Saints' lead down to ten points, 61-51, with eight minutes left. Thomas knocked down another timely three to put Seward County up 66-51 and on a 5-0 run in response to Independence. In the final minute of action, the Pirates converted a layup and went on an 11-5 run to cut Seward County's lead down to 70-62. The Lady Saints held off the Pirates and finished the contest with a free throw to win 71-62. 

Seward County will host Garden City Community College in the Greenhouse on Wednesday, December 7th, at 6 p.m. CT.
