The Lady Saints upset the No. 23 Pirates 80-75

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - Seward County Community College waited an extra day due to weather but they defeat No. 23 Independence Community college 80-75 on Thursday afternoon. The Lady Saints started off with a 7-0 run and led by 16 points in the second quarter but the Pirates came back to take the lead 75-73 in the fourth quarter. Seward County responded with the final seven points of the game to claim the victory 80-75. Zhane Thompson led the team with 22 points and six three-pointers.   

The Lady Saints extend their winning streak to eight in a row and improve to 18-6 overall, 14-4 in the KJCCC. They will face Garden City Community College in the Greenhouse at 6 PM on Saturday, February 5th. 

Seward County started the game with a 7-0 run in the first two minutes. Independence cut the lead back down to two points at 15-13 with three minutes left in the quarter and Seward County responded with a three by Sydney Wetlaufer. At the end of the first quarter, the Lady Saints led 20-18.

To start the second quarter the Lady saints went on a 9-0 run to take a 29-18 advantage over the Pirates. Seward County took a 35-24 lead after one of the six three's by Zhane Thompson with five minutes left in the quarter. Another three by Thompson gave the Lady Saints their largest lead of the game 38-24 with five minutes left. Seward County went into halftime with a 50-37 lead over Independence. 

In the third quarter, the Pirates were able to cut the lead down to single digits 54-45 with 4:31 left in the quarter. The Lady Saints connected on back-to-back threes to regain a 16 point lead 63-47 in the final minute of the quarter. At the end of the third quarter, Seward County led 63-49 over Independence. 

The Pirates came out in the fourth quarter to get back within 10 points 70-60 at the seven-minute mark. Seward County was outscored 15-3 in the next four minutes of action to trail for the first time at 75-73. With three minutes left in the game, the Lady Saints were able to tie it at 75 all after a layup by Hulda Joaquim.

With 13 seconds left Joaquim connected on another layup to lead 78-75. The Pirates had an opportunity to tie it but it fell short and the Lady Saints Thompson connected on pair of free throws to seal the game. Seward County claims the victory 80-75 at Independence. 

Seward County was led by Zhane Thompson's 22 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Hulda Joaquim and Halima Salat had 11 points of their own, Miyah Dubose added 10 points as well.
