No. 25 Seward County came up short at No. 2 Chipola 93-87

MARIANNA, Fla. - Seward County Community College' women's basketball team loses at Chipola College 93-87 on Friday night. The Lady Saints had a 30-17 lead after the 1st quarter but Chipola made a run to lead 49-47 at halftime. Seward County took the lead back with a 73-71 advantage but Chipola closed out the game to win 93-87. The Lady Saints suffered their first loss of the season and falls to 2-1 on the year.

The Lady Saints started the game with a three by Miyah Dubose to cut the lead to one as the Indians led 4-3 with 8 minutes to go in the first quarter. Seward County took the lead for the first time with a lay-up by D'Arrah Allen and led 10-9 with five minutes left in the quarter. Halima Salat closed out the first quarter with her second corner three of the quarter as the Lady Saints took their largest lead of the game 30-17.

Chipola College started off the second quarter with a run to cut the lead down to three points with the Lady Saints in the lead 38-35. The Indians took the lead 42-40 and the Lady Saints continued to battle with the Indians. Chipola went into halftime with a 49-47 lead after a pair of free throws with 2 seconds left in the quarter.

Seward County was able to get back within one point at the 4:47 mark in the third quarter with corner three by Salat. Zhane Thompson gave the Lady Saints their largest lead of the second half with a three from the left-wing as the Lady Saints led 71-64. Chipola closed out the third quarter with a 7-2 run as Seward led 73-71 entering the fourth quarter.

Chipola College came out strong in the fourth quarter and took an 88-78 lead with four minutes left in the contest. Hulda Joaquim connected on a three to get the Lady Saints back within seven, 88-81. Seward County went cold offensively in the final minutes as Chipola came away with the win 93-87. 

The Lady Saints were led by Zhane Thompson with 20 points as she went 6-15 from three-point range. Zayla Tinner had 16 points, and Halima Salat added 13 points off of the bench for Seward County.

Seward County will face Gulf Coast College at 3 PM on November 13th in Marianna, Florida.
