Seward County falls to Independence 82-63

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. - Seward County Community College falls to Independence Community College 82-63 on the road on Saturday, December 3rd. The Saints went into halftime down 30-28, but the Pirates got hot in the second half to outscore Seward County 52-35. The Saints are now 5-4 on the season and 2-4 in the KJCCC and will be back in action Wednesday, December 7th, at 8 p.m. CT against Garden City Community College. 

Jaylin Henderson, a sophomore for the Saints, led the way with 23 points, two rebounds, and one steal. Ray Glasgow had a season-high nine points, and Jimmy Sorunke added a career-high of his own with 15 points. 

At the start of the game, the Pirates jumped out to an early 6-0 lead over the Saints but was answered with a three by Henderson at the 17-minute mark. The Saints pilled on a quick 8-3 run to cut the lead down to 9-8 at the first media timeout with 13:21 on the clock. Independence responded with a 9-3 run of their own to take an 18-11 advantage over the Saints, and a Tre Stafford layup cut the lead down to 18-15. 

With 7:29 left in the first half, Seward County tied the game at 21 after a Jaden Martin layup, and the momentum shifted to the Saints. After a Ty foster layup gave the Saints a 28-22 advantage with the final four minutes to play. The Pirates responded with an 8-0 run to close out the half and regain the lead over the Saints 30-28 at halftime. 

In the second half, the Pirates got hot from three-point range and took a 43-31 lead over the Saints early in the second half. Seward County continued to battle and cut the lead down to ten again with a layup by Glasgow, 51-41. A final run by the Pirates separated them from the Saints with a 16-2 run, and Independence led 74-50, their largest game lead with four minutes left in the contest. The damage was done, and the Saints could not go on a last-minute run as the Pirates won 82-63. 

Seward County will look to bounce back home on Wednesday night against Garden City at 8 p.m. CT.
