Softball Falls in Sweep to Nationally Ranked D2 Aggies

Liberal, Kansas – Friday afternoon began day two of Seward County softball's road trip with the Lady Saints taking on the Aggies of Murray State where despite pushing ahead 3-0 to start both games, Seward County was unable to hold off the nationally ranked D2 Aggies who swept the Lady Saints with a 7-5 loss in game one and an 8-4 loss in game two.

Seward County started the game off in a big way with three straight home run bombs by Alyssa Morgan, Samantha Gomez, and reigning KJCCC player of the week Anberlin O'Dell who all made it beyond the fences to put the Lady Saints ahead 3-0 after the top of the first. The Aggies answered back in the bottom of the inning with a double on a line drive that brought in their first run of the day that was followed by a three-run homer out to center field to take a 4-3 lead after one. Another home run hit by Murray State in the third allowed three more runners to make their way around the bases and increase their lead farther ahead to 7-3. Jayah Tellez poped one out towards second base in the fifth inning to help bring home Mollie Hardy and a double from Zoe Lampe helped bat in a run from Aaliyah Gutierrez but it was not enough as SCCC could not catch up to the Aggies and fell 7-5 in game one of the doubleheader.

Game two of the doubleheader saw the Lady Saints repeat their start in game one with the first three scores of the game with O'Dell grounding out on a single to drive in Kamryn Martinez to start the first inning strong. Gomez stepped up to the plate and singled with a line drive to drive in Morgan to take a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Gutierrez drew the pitcher's attention while stealing second and some errors by the Aggies in the top of the second allowed Seward County to walk right on in with another run to go up 3-0. Murray State found a way to respond just like in game one with three singles to drive in their first three scores of game two and lock the score back up at 3-3. An error by the Lady Saints fielding allowed for the Aggies to reach home in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead which quickly grew off a home run hit to increase Murray State's lead to 7-3. Another home run in the next inning put the Aggies total to 8 and although Gutierrez was able to score off a line drive by Morgan, Seward County fell in game two 8-4.

The Lady Saints now fall to a 3-5 record to start the 2024 season after falling in back-to-back sweeps to start their road trip. They will look to bounce back quickly when they take the field Sunday at noon for a doubleheader against Allen to continue their twelve game road stint.
