No. 8 Lady Saints lose on buzzer beater

COFFEYVILLE, Kan. – The No. 8 Seward County Lady Saints women's basketball team came across shooting woes in Coffeyville, losing on a last second buzzer beater to the Red Ravens, 64-61. This is just the second regular season loss to Coffeyville in Seward program history.

The Lady Saints jumped out to an 8-3 lead after two Lexi Hernandez three pointers.  The game quickly turned around though, as the Red Ravens went on a 6-0 run to take the lead. Vanessa Caro scored five straight to go up four with 3:36 left in the first quarter.  The Lady Saints would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the quarter, leading 17-15.

Despite their lead, Seward only shot 31.6 percent from the field, while the Red Ravens shot 50 percent.

It didn't take long for the Red Ravens to take control of the game following the first quarter.  Following a quick layup by Vilma Covane, Coffeyville went on a 7-0 run to take the lead, one they would keep the rest of the game. Vilma and Carla Covane combined for three more field goals, but that would be all the Lady Saints could muster in the second quarter, while the Red Ravens scored 17.

The Lady Saints shot just 30.8% from the floor in the second quarter, making 4 of 13 shots, while the Red Ravens shot 50% again on 7 of 14 shots.  V. Covane made seven of her nine points in the first half.

Seward opened the second half on a 5-2 run to cut the lead to four, but the Red Ravens had an answer for every run the Lady Saints went on. The Red Ravens pushed the lead back seven just two minutes later at 37-30. The teams traded points the remainder of the quarter, but the lead stayed at seven at 48-41.

The Lady Saints came storming back in the fourth quarter, going on a 12-5 run over the first five minutes to tie it at 53 with an Amy Scott free throw. Once again however, the Red Ravens had an answer, going on a 6-0 run, taking a 59-53 lead with 2:15 left in the game.

Seward fought back again, going on their own 6-0 run. Scott came through again, tying the game at 59 with a layup with just 15 seconds left. Both teams would hit a pair of free throws over the next 13 seconds, with Mounsey tying the game at 61 with just two seconds left.  The Red Ravens pushed the ball up the floor and hit a three-pointer from the corner as time expired, completing their upset over Seward.

Lexi Hernandez was the lone Lady Saint to reach double-figures, finishing with a career-high 16 points.  The Lady Saints shot just 32.8 percent from the field and only 22.6 percent from behind the arc, while the Red Ravens connected on 45.3% of their shots.

The Lady Saints will be back in action in the Greenhouse at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday (Dec. 6) when they take on the Allen Red Devils. The game will be free for all fans thanks to our sponsor Great Western Dining and Flooring America.
