#4 Seward Marches Closer to Jayhawk Conference Title

The #4 Seward County Lady Saints took one step closer to the Jayhawk Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon in Dodge City's new Student Activities Center, hammering the homestanding Conquistadors 97-48 to improve to 28-1 on the year.

Seward made a statement right away, jumping out to a 14-2 lead on Dodge City just four minutes in, using a combination of driving layups and bunnies on the inside from Joanna Grymek to grab the early lead.  Back to back threes from Valerie Caro put Seward in front 23-5 and another triple from the freshmen moments later made it a 26-7 contest.  In the final 30 seconds of the first, it was Neidy Ocuane's turn to dial it up from deep as she splashed home a pair of threes to give the Lady Saints a 32-13 lead after one.

It took Seward a while to get going in the second as they didn't net their second field goal of the period until the 6:44 mark, but still remained comfortably in front 39-18.  A nice defensive stand allowed them to stretch their lead to 25 at 45-20 and then a flurry of activity before the break put them up big at the half 58-25.

Seward shot 51% overall in the first half and were even better from distance where they shot 52% as a team.  Three Lady Saints reached double figures in scoring in the half including Ocuane who had 15, Mollie Mounsey with 12, and Brennyn Seagler with 10.

The Lady Saints continued to pour it on as the second half began, dropping in the first nine points of the third quarter to push their lead to the biggest of the night at that point at 67-25.  Seward's bench took over for much of the rest of the third, holding the 42 point advantage to take an 80-38 lead after three.

The Seward starters played the first couple minutes of the fourth and pushed the lead to 46 before exiting and the Lady Saints reserves didn't let up on the Conqs the rest of the way, eventually making it a 51 point Seward County lead before coasting to a 97-48 win.

Seward finished the game shooting 47% from the field while holding Dodge City to just 21% on the afternoon.  The Lady Saints dominated play on the inside, outscoring the Conqs 48-14 in the painted area.  Five Lady Saints reached double figures in the win including Mounsey who scored a game high 20 and Ocuane who had 19 while Grymek notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in just 19 minutes of work.

Seward will now have a chance to play for at least a share of the Jayhawk Conference title on Monday at home in the Greenhouse when they take on Garden City in a 6:00 tip.  The Lady Saints improve to 28-1 overall and 24-1 in conference action with the win over Dodge.  The Conquistadors continue a miserable season, falling to 4-25 overall and 4-21 in league play.
