Lady Saints Split Two On Annual Holiday Trip

Lady Saints Split Two On Annual Holiday Trip

It was a mixed bag for the Seward County Lady Saints on their annual holiday trip this season.  The day after Christmas, the Lady Saints packed up and headed to Phoenix, Arizona for a pair of contests and after a tough venture through a driving snowstorm, Seward came away 1-1 with an 83-48 loss to Central Arizona followed up with a 65-39 win over Scottsdale.

After arriving late on Saturday the Lady Saints had to get themselves ready for a rare Sunday matinee affair which was scheduled to start at 2:00 against Central Arizona.  However, Central Arizona organizers failed to alert any officials of the game and therefore at game time, there was nobody in stripes in the CAC gymnasium.  After a little over a 1:20 delay, the game finally got going with fill in referees and it wasn't pretty for Seward County from the start.  The ball looked like a greased pig in the hands of the Lady Saints as they turned it over early and often to the Vaqueros.  Central jumped out to a big early lead and the Lady Saints never recovered.  In the end it turned out to be an ugly 83-48 defeat for the Lady Saints in a game that they finished with 43 turnovers.  Seward shot just 33% from the field and 21% from the three point line in the loss, having just one player, Joanna Grymek, reach double figures in scoring with 11.

In their second and final game of the trip, the Lady Saints took on the Fighting Artichokes of Scottsdale Community College.  This time the Lady Saints got off to a much better start, opening up a three point lead after one quarter of action before taking a 31-19 lead into the break at half.  Seward continued their defensive stand in the second half, eventually suffocating the Artichokes to the tune of a 65-39 win.  The Lady Saints still struggled offensively, shooting under 40% for the second straight game while making just 2 of 14 from the three point line.  But, their defense was the key, allowing Scottsdale to shoot just 25% and dominating the glass 45-31 in the win.  Grymek again led Seward, this time with 13 points in the victory while Axelle Bernard bounced back from a rough first game in the desert with a 12 point, 10 rebound double-double for the Lady Saints.

Seward wraps up their non-conference slate 11-3 and will jump back into Jayhawk Conference action on Saturday on the road at Independence where they will look to improve upon a 3-1 early season mark.
