Red Hot Lady Saints Blow By Barton

Red Hot Lady Saints Blow By Barton

For some reason, through four Jayhawk West Conference games, the #8 Seward County Lady Saints have enjoyed shooting in opposing teams gyms much more than their own and that trend continued on Monday as the Lady Saints torched the nets for 60% shooting as Seward built a 30 point first half lead before breezing past Barton 86-52 to improve to 16-1 overall and 4-0 in Jayhawk West play on the season.

In a game that was a makeup from an originally scheduled January 3rd contest that was postponed due to ice and snow, the Lady Saints were anything but cold early on, jumping all over Barton from the outset in the Kirkman Center, getting out to an 11-0 lead in the first three minutes of action behind buckets from four of their five starters.  Seward continued to onslaught, stretching their advantage to 21-5 on a three from Daniela Galindo and went on top 20 points on a fast break bucket by Kyndal Davis.  The Lady Saints kept pouring it on, hitting the 50 point park with over 3:00 remaining in the half as Axelle Bernard put them up by a count of 50-17 with a soft touch jumper.  At the break it was all Lady Saints with Seward leading the Cougars by a count of 55-25.

Seward shot 74% in the first 20 minutes of action, going 20 for 27 from the field.  The Lady Saints also connected on 7 of 12 from three point land, good for a 58% clip.  Rebekah Hatchard led Seward with 15 points, including four three pointers, while Tamara Seda added 14 and Galindo 11 off the Seward bench.

Barton finally got things going a little bit as the second half got underway, but the Lady Saints kept on firing on the offensive end and back to back three pointers from Hatchard, her fifth and sixth of the night, stretched the Seward lead back to 33 at 69-36 with 12:11 to go in the game.  Both teams hit a lull through the middle portion of the half and neither scored for a stretch of 3:02 as the score remained 71-41 in favor of the Lady Saints.  Leslie Speer got into the scoring act with 3:52 left to give Seward their largest lead of the game at 81-46 and the Lady Saints went on to cruise to an 86-52 win over the Cougars.

The Lady Saints finished the night shooting 60% from the floor, their second highest output of the season and also turned around their trend from three point land where they shot 44% as a team.  Hatchard led Seward with a career high 21 points in the Lady Saints victory.  Her 6 made three pointers tied for 3rd best in a game in school history.  Seda and Galindo finished with 16 for the gals in green while Davis chipped in 15 and 5 assists.

Seward wins their fourth straight to improve to 16-1 on the year.  The Lady Saints remain in the top spot in the Jayhawk West standings, moving to 4-0 with the victory.  Barton falls to 11-5 overall and 1-3 in Jayhawk West play.

After a wild first week of Jayhawk West action, playing four games in eight days, the Lady Saints will get a much needed four day rest until Saturday when they travel to Dodge City to take on the Lady Conqs in a 5:30 start.
