#20 Lady Saints Blow Out South Plains to Kick Off 2014 Billy's/Days Inn Classic

#20 Lady Saints Blow Out South Plains to Kick Off 2014 Billy's/Days Inn Classic

Playing in just their second game in 14 days, the #20 Seward County Lady Saints showed no sign of rust Friday night in the Greenhouse, jumping out to a 21 point halftime lead in route to an 84-56 shellacking of South Plains to improve to 4-0 on the year.

The night started well for the Lady Saints and it came with a heavy dose of Tamara Seda and Axelle Bernard on the inside.  Just two days after signing with UTEP, Seda scored the first four points of the game Friday night and Bernard picked up a pair of buckets to give the Lady Saints an early 9-6 lead.  Two straight threes by Rebekah Hatchard from nearly the identical place on the floor extended the Lady Saints lead and after another Seda finish in the paint it was 19-11 Seward five minutes in.  The Lady Saints offense kept on clicking and a three by Daniela Galindo and a pair of steal and scores from Kyndal Davis had Seward up big 32-15.  Seward got four free throws in the final minute of the first half by Seda to reach the 50 point mark and went into the break on top by a score of 50-29.  Seda had 18 first half points to lead all scorers while Bernard filled the stat sheet up with 7 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 first half assists.  Seward shot 58% as a team in the half while holding the Lady Texans to just 39% from the floor.

It didn't take the Lady Saints long to extend their lead to 30 as the second half began, stretching their advantage to 65-35 at the 15:52 mark.  They continued to hold a big advantage and pushed their lead to a game high 31 on a three by Hatchard with just under 8:00 to go.  Emptying the bench in the second half didn't seem to effect the Lady Saints hold on the game as Shania Liggett and Jasmine Jordan got in the scoring act late to help Seward pick up a 84-56 win.

Seward finished the night shooting 52% from the field while South Plains struggled to just 36% on the night.  The Lady Saints got a game high 30 from Seda while Hatchard matched her career high with 17 including a trio of three pointers.  While she failed to score on just two shots, point guard Brianna Scott put together a good night distributing the basketball, dishing out a career high 9 assists without turning the ball over in the win.

The #20 Lady Saints improve to 4-0 on the year while South Plains drops to 1-2 in their first action in two weeks.  Next up will be another test for Seward as they take on perennial Texas power Midland Saturday night at 6:00 in the Greenhouse.
