Lady Saints cruise to doubleheader sweep of Broncbusters

LIBERAL, Kan. – The Seward County Community College softball team was running on all cylinders against Garden City Community College in a pair of run-rule victories, 9-0 and 9-1, on Saturday at French Family Field.

The Lady Saints play at Dodge City at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

GAME ONE

Seward scored nine runs in the first three innings and that was all Jordan Cordrey needed to cruise to the five-inning, run-rule victory in the opener.

The Lady Saints scored two runs in the first inning, three in second and four in the third for a nine-run lead.

Cordrey tossed a one-hit shutout to earn the win. It was her first shutout of the season. She struck out four and walked two over five innings. Cordrey had a no-hitter through four innings until she allowed a single in the fifth.

Nissy Lechuga went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Jaci Oakley and Madeline Owen each contributed two hits and drove in two runs for Seward, which pounded out 12 hits. Alyssah Pontoja and Nicole Nelson also added two hits each for the Lady Saints.  

GAME TWO

Seward used a strong offense and solid pitching to post a five-inning, run-rule win in the nightcap.

The Lady Saints, who had 14 hits, stormed out to a 7-1 lead through four innings and never looked back. Seward scored three runs in the third inning, two in second and two in the third for its seven runs.

Garden City tallied its lone run in the top of the third. Seward ended the game in the bottom of the fifth on a run rule when it scored two more runs for a 9-1 win.

Seward's Madeline Owen went 3-for-3 with three RBI and was a single short of the cycle. Owen tripled in the first inning, homered in the third and doubled in the fourth. Nissy Lechuga also drove in three runs with a pair of hits and Miranda Nester and Jordan Cordrey each had two hits for the Lady Saints, who had every starter with a hit.

Alyssah Pontoja was strong in earning the win, allowing an unearned run on five hits, striking out one and walking none over five innings.
