Lady Saints Can't Break Through Against Trojans in Colby

The Seward County Lady Saints faced a tough task of battling a Colby team in the middle of a breakout season and undefeated at home this year.  The Lady Saints couldn't break through against the Trojans though as Seward managed just two hits in a 5-0 opening game loss and were run ruled in game two 11-2 to fall to 0-6 on the year in Jayhawk West play.

The Lady Trojans jumped in front early, getting a pair of two out runs in the 1st to go ahead of Seward 2-0.

After a quick 1-2-3 top half of the 2nd for the Lady Saints, Colby added a run in the bottom half of the inning to extend their lead to 3-0.

Seward again couldn't get anything going in the 3rd and again the Trojans plated a run to add to their lead, making it a 4-0 game.

The Lady Saints offense remained ice cold through the middle of the game and through five, they still did not have a hit against Colby starter Kylee Burnside.

Seward picked up their first hit of the game with one out in the 6th when Jaidyn Mawhinney singled, but the Lady Saints couldn't push her around and she was stranded at innings end to leave Seward behind 4-0 with just three outs left in the game.

The Trojans added an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th to go ahead 5-0, but wouldn't end up needing it as the Lady Saints went down in the order in their final at bats in the 7th to fall in the opener 5-0.

Seward managed just two hits in the contest, getting one from Mawhinney and the other a single from Hannah ClarkKelly Kearney took the loss in the circle, allowing 8 hits and 5 runs, walking 5 and striking out 3.

SEWARD COUNTY/COLBY GAME ONE BOX SCORE

Game two got off to another bad start for the Lady Saints as Seward went three up, three down in the top half of the 1st inning and watched as Colby's first two hitters of the game got on in the bottom half before a three run home run gave the Trojans a 3-0 lead to get things going.

A solo home run from Kristyna Garcia gave Seward their first run of the doubleheader in the 2nd to cut the Colby lead to 3-1, but the Trojans answered back with a huge bottom half of the frame, scoring five times, including another three run home run to blow the game open to 8-1.

Colby's third home run of the game made it 9-1 after three.

In the Seward half of the 4th, the Lady Saints got a walk and a double to put two runners in scoring position with nobody out, but managed just one run on a sacrifice fly to remain behind 9-2.

Colby got two more in the 4th to make it a nine run game and closed the Lady Saints out in the 5th to end the game in an 11-2 run rule.

Seward managed just four hits in the game while Colby slugged out 13.  Garcia was 2 for 2 in the middle of the Seward order with a run scored and a run driven home, both coming on the solo homer. Mawhinney was saddled with the loss, lasting just 1 1/3 innings, allowing 7 hits and 8 runs to fall to 6-8 on the year.

SEWARD COUNTY/COLBY GAME TWO BOX SCORE

The losses stop some of the Lady Saints momentum after winning 8 of 10. Seward falls to 15-21 on the year and remains winless in Jayhawk West Conference play at 0-6.  Colby continues a breakout year, improving to 26-8 overall and 8-2 in league action.

The Lady Saints return home next week where they will host Lamar in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday before returning to conference play Thursday against Butler.
