Curse of Texas Remains on Lady Saints

Curse of Texas Remains on Lady Saints

The good news for the Seward County Lady Saints is that they don't have another game the rest of the season scheduled in the state of Texas.  The bad news is, they dropped two more games in the Lone Star State on Saturday, falling to 0-10 on the season in the state.

Seward's first game of the day was a tough one as they took on a 15 win Ranger squad in Odessa.  The Rangers jumped on the Lady Saints right away, scoring three times in the top of the 1st inning to take a 3-0 lead before Seward even got a chance to swing the bats.  Seward couldn't answer and their offense remained cold to start the game and it remained a 3-0 game through three innings of action.  It was nothing going again in the 4th and to the 5th the Lady Saints and Rangers went with the score still 3-0 in favor of Ranger.  Lady Saint starter Kelly Kearney continued to give Seward a chance to get back into the game, but the Lady Saints offense could not.  Seward went down 1-2-3 in the 5th and Ranger added a run in the top of the 6th to extend their lead to 4-0. In their final at bats, the Lady Saints threatened, putting two runners on and bringing the tying run to the on deck circle, but they couldn't push anything across, leaving the ducks on the pond as Ranger finished off a 4-0 shutout win.

Seward was outhit 7-5 in the game with 3 of their 5 hits coming off the bat of Brittany Corrales who was a perfect 3 for 3.  Kearney worked around trouble all morning, going all 7 innings in the circle for the Lady Saints, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits while walking 6 and striking out 1 to fall to 3-3 on the year.

In their final game of the weekend, Seward played Odessa for the second time in as many days. This time they didn't wait around to try to put some offense together, getting a 1st inning run on a single from Kristyna Garcia to put the Lady Saints in front early 1-0.  Unfortunately, their lead didn't last long as the Wranglers answered right back with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame to put themselves in front for the first time 4-1.  In Seward's next trip to the plate Corrales remained red hot, smashing a double to the gap plating two and bringing the Lady Saints back to within one at 4-3.  But again, Seward's pitching couldn't slow down the Odessa offense, handing back six runs in the bottom of the 2nd as Odessa ballooned their lead to 10-3.  The Wranglers were back at it again in the 3rd, adding three more to put a mile between them and the Lady Saints with a 13-3 lead.  Madeline Cordova laced a double to drive home a run for Seward, but that is all they would get as they fell 13-4 in a run rule after five to finish the weekend 0-5.

The Lady Saints finished the game with 7 hits while Odessa had 12.  Corrales again paced the offense with a 2 for 3 game, driving in 2.  Garcia also had 2 hits in 3 trips, driving in 1.  Alexis Cuellar was hit hard in the loss, allowing 10 runs on 8 hits, falling to 0-3 on the year.
