16 Seward Student-Athletes Honored by NJCAA For Academics

Academic awards from the 2015-2016 school year continued to pour in for Seward County student-athletes on Thursday as 16 Saints and Lady Saints were honored with NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards as announced by the governing body.

The 2015-2016 school year proved to be more than just a successful one on the court and in the fields for the Seward County student-athletes as Wednesday it was announced that 63 of 99 student-athletes made their way onto the Spring 2016 Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.

Two days after seeing their 2016 season come to an end, there was a bright spot for a pair of Seward County Lady Saints on Friday as middle infield combo Brittany Corrales and Kennedy Brunson were named 1st Team All-Jayhawk West and 1st Team All-Region VI.

Collecting 12 hits, but leaving 10 runners on, the Seward County Lady Saints fell 10-5 to Dodge City in the opening round of the 2016 NJCAA Region VI Tournament Tuesday in El Dorado, putting themselves in an uphill battle to continue their season on Wednesday.

After a disappointing 2016 to this point, the Seward County Lady Saints couldn’t have scripted the ending to their Jayhawk West and regular season finales much better than what occurred on Monday at Lady Saints Field in Liberal. Trailing 5-2 going into the 7th and final inning in game one, Seward scored four times, including twice on a Colby error to pick up a 6-5 walk off win. In game two the Lady Saints needed dramatics again watching Colby erase a 7th inning Seward lead this time before the Lady Saints got a walk off single from Kristyna Garcia with the bases loaded and two outs in the 8th to give them a 7-6 win to sweep the Trojans.

The Seward County Lady Saints suffered a disappointing sweep Friday afternoon in Pratt, as they were beaten twice by the sixth place Beavers, falling by scores of 6-3 and 10-9 to fall to 23-31 on the year.

An upset win over the 6th ranked and red hot Butler Grizzlies just wasn’t in the cards for the Seward County Lady Saints Saturday afternoon at East Park in El Dorado. Butler was slow and steady in game one, scoring in all five innings for an 8-0 win over the Lady Saints while in game two, the Grizzlies used a seven run 5th for another run rule victory, this time to the tune of a 10-1 contest to sweep the twinbill from Seward.

With half of their eight remaining Jayhawk West games scheduled against the team they were tied with in the conference standings, the Pratt Beavers, the Seward County Lady Saints had a chance to make a move in the standings Wednesday afternoon at Lady Saints Field in Liberal. They took advantage of their opportunity, sweeping the twinbill from the Beavers, shutting them out 4-0 in the opener and out slugging them in game two 11-4 to inch closer to the .500 mark on the season.

When you think about names for softball players, you can’t think of a much better one than Venice Batts. Batts let her bat do the talking this week, crushing four home runs and driving in 12 runs to be named the Jayhawk West Co-Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

In a season that has been somewhat of a roller coaster ride, the Seward County Lady Saints strapped on their seatbelts once again on Saturday as they took on the Garden City Broncbusters on the road in Garden City. After a slow start to game one, the Lady Saints put up eight runs in the final two innings to come away with a 9-5 win before putting up a six spot in the final inning of game two to finish off the sweep of the Busters with a 16-8 victory.

The Seward County Lady Saints were on the unfortunate end of an impressive offensive onslaught Wednesday afternoon at Lady Saints Field in Liberal, watching the visiting and 10th ranked Barton Cougars launch six home runs in the first two innings of game one in route to a 21-10 win before the Cougars held off a late Seward rally in game two to win 6-5 and not only sweep the doubleheader, but sweep the season series from the Lady Saints.

It was a must win doubleheader for both sides as the Seward County Lady Saints and the Garden City Broncbusters hooked up in Jayhawk West Conference action Monday afternoon in Liberal. Game one looked like it was going the way of the Busters as they led 3-2 in the bottom of the 7th and final inning, but the Lady Saints put together a thrilling finish, scoring twice with their backs to the wall, getting a walk off double from Brittany Corrales to come through with the 4-3 win. Game two was less exciting for Buster fans as the Lady Saints dominated from the start, eventually coming away with a 7-0 win to sweep the doubleheader and win their second and third straight conference games after an 0-9 start.

To say that the Seward County Lady Saints had a monkey riding firmly on their backs for their past eight Jayhawk West Conference games might be an understatement. Whether it was a gorilla, or chimpanzee is up for debate, but whatever it was, the Lady Saints threw it off Saturday in Dodge City, following up a 5-3 game one loss to the Conqs with a 15-7 run rule win in game two to earn their first conference win of the season.

Trying to get off of the Jayhawk West schneid, the Seward County Lady Saints faced a tough opponent to do so against Thursday afternoon at Lady Saints Field in Liberal as they took on the 7th ranked and 1st place Butler Grizzlies. Seward hung tough with Butler in game one before a big 4th inning propelled the Grizzlies to a 13-6 win while in game two, the Lady Saints were never able to get their bats going, falling 8-0 in a six inning run rule.

The Seward County Lady Saints got back on track Tuesday afternoon at Lady Saints Field in Liberal, pushing through a windblown day to pick up 5-2 and 7-4 wins over visiting Lamar thanks in large part to four multi-run innings, including a four run 5th to break a 3-3 tie in game two.
