Seward All Over Pratt in Region VI Preview

In what was a preview of the 1st round of the upcoming NJCAA Region VI Playoffs which begin next Tuesday at venues across the Sunflower State, the Seward County Lady Saints had little trouble with the visiting Pratt Beavers Monday afternoon in Liberal as the gals in green swept a doubleheader from the Beavs, winning game one 10-3 before shutting Pratt out in the nightcap 3-0.

Despite taking on a Pratt team with just eight wins on the 2015 campaign, the Seward County Lady Saints had trouble getting going early on Monday in their final regular season home games of the season.

It was scoreless between Seward and Pratt through two innings of action and it looked like Pratt might get on the board first after putting three runners on the sacks in the 3rd, but Lady Saint starter Alexa O'Brien picked up a key strikeout to end the threat and keep the game tied at 0.

Seward responded in a big way in the bottom of the inning, getting an RBI triple from Jaidyn Mawhinney and back to back RBI singles from Kolby Hamilton and Hannah Clark to open up a 3-0 lead.  They weren't done there, getting back to back RBI knocks from sophomores Vanessa Oakden and Danielle Orr before finally an RBI double from Joe Ann Rapoza, who led off the inning with a single, to open their lead to 6-0.

Pratt got a run back in the 4th on a solo home run and after a quick 4th for Seward, the Beavers got two more in the 5th to all of a sudden cut the Lady Saints lead in half to 6-3.

Seward again couldn't do anything with a runner in scoring position in the 5th, but they did in the 6th as Clark knocked home another run with a single and Oakden continued her big day with an RBI single of her own to make it 9-3.  Seward added another run in the inning and after six complete it was 10-3 in favor of the Lady Saints.

The big inning for the Lady Saints took the spirit out of the Beavers as Pratt went down quietly in their final at bats and just like that Seward had themselves a 10-3 game one win.

Seward had 14 hits in the win, getting hits from eight of their nine starters in the contest. Oakden was a perfect 4 for 4  with 2 RBI's for the Lady Saints while Clark had a big game as well, going 3 for 4 with 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored.  O'Brien earned the win, going the whole way in the circle for the Lady Saints.  She improved to 16-11 on the year, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs while striking out 5.

SEWARD COUNTY/PRATT GAME ONE BOX SCORE

In game two the Beavers threatened in their half of the 1st, but Lady Saints starter Jaclyn Wagner got out of the mess with a strikeout to give Seward a chance to take an early lead.

The Lady Saints did just that, using three straight Pratt errors to begin their half of the 1st to score two runs and jump on top of the Beavers 2-0.

Pratt put the tying runs on base in the 3rd, but again a Wagner strikeout doused the Beavers fire to keep it a 2-0 game.

The Lady Saints had their chance to extend upon the lead in the bottom of the 3rd as they got two straight singles to start the inning, but they couldn't do anything with the ducks on the pond, stranding a pair to keep it 2-0.

Oakden continued her big day for the gals in green in the 4th, leading off the Seward half with a solo home run to stretch their lead to 3-0 and that was enough for Wagner who retired nine of the last 10 batters she saw in the game to finish off her fifth shutout of the year in a 3-0 Lady Saints victory.

For the second straight game, eight of nine Lady Saint starters had a hit in the win.  Seward outhit the Beavers 8-6 in the contest.  Oakden had the only extra base hit of the game with her 4th inning home run and also had the only RBI on the afternoon.  Wagner was sharp for the Lady Saints, going the distance to improve to 17-8 on the year.  She allowed 6 hits, all singles in her shutout victory, striking out 6 without walking a batter.

SEWARD COUNTY/PRATT GAME TWO BOX SCORE

Seward improves to 33-21 overall and 14-8 in Jayhawk West play with the wins.  The Lady Saints lock up 2nd place in the conference standings while Pratt drops to 8-34 and 5-17 where they will finish in the cellar in the West.

The Lady Saints will hit the road to Colby on Wednesday to take on the Lady Trojans in their regular season finale before returning home to take on Pratt once again in a best two out of three series with the Beavers beginning in Liberal on Tuesday.
