Bombs Away For Seward in Regular Season Finales

Bombs Away For Seward in Regular Season Finales

The Seward County Lady Saints wrapped up the 2014 regular season in style on Friday in Great Bend, pounding the homestanding Barton Cougars 18-2 and 16-7 in run rule fashion to close out their regular season with a 45-11 overall record.

It didn't take long for the Lady Saints to get the scoring going in game one of the doubleheader as Andrea Sitter singled and stole second before scoring on an RBI single from Becky Allen to quickly give Seward a 1-0 lead in the top half of the 1st

Barton answered with a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the 1st and just like that the game was tied at 1.

Seward jumped back in front in the 2nd after Joe Ann Rapoza walked to lead off the inning and Barton misplayed a fly ball in short right field to allow her to score later in the inning to make it 2-1 Lady Saints.

The Seward 3rd was one for the ages as they sent 17 hitters to the plate scoring 13 runs to blow the game wide open. The scoring got started with a single from Danielle Orr to score two runs and three batters later Tiffanie Bolanos scalded a ball over the left center field wall for a three run home run to quickly make it a 7-1 game.  Singles from Andrea Sitter and Pokey Ewell both collected RBI singles to make it a 9-1 game and the scoring didn't stop there.  Orr ripped her second two RBI single of the inning through the hole to stretch the Lady Saints lead to 11-1 and they kept on hitting with one out in the frame.  Rapoza's second hit of the inning plated another run and Bolanos continued to swing her hot bat, driving home two more to make it 14-1 Seward.  A Barton error pushed the lead to 15-1 and the Lady Saints scored once more later in the inning to take a 16-1 lead at innings end.

The Lady Saints added another run in the 4th and one more in the 5th while Barton got a lone tally in the 4th as Seward walked away with an 18-2 run rule win in five innings.

Seward finished the game with 18 hits while Barton managed just 6.  Ten different Lady Saints had hits in the contest while nobody had more than 2 knocks in the win.  Orr and Bolanos led the Lady Saints in the blowout, each going 2 for 4 with 4 RBI's for Seward.  Katelyn Craker pitched her way to an easy win, going 5 innings and allowing 6 hits and 2 runs while striking out 2 Lady Cougar hitters to improve to 21-4 on the year.

SEWARD COUNTY/BARTON GAME ONE BOX SCORE

Game two began much like game one did as Sitter reached to start things and stole third in front of a sac fly from Allen to put the Lady Saints up 1-0 in the 1st.  Later in the inning Marissa Chavez grounded out to drive in another run and before the Lady Cougars had a chance to hit it was 2-0 Seward County.

The Lady Saints blew the game wide open in the 2nd as Sitter and Ewell doubled back to back early in the inning to score three runs and after a walk to Allen, Chavez doubled to score another Seward run to make it 6-0.  The doublefest continued as Orr got into the act with a two bagger of her own to score two more runs to make it an 8-0 game.  Following a pitching change, Rapoza greeted the Barton reliever with an RBI single and with two outs in the frame she scored on another RBI single from Bolanos to make it a 10-0 game after 1 ½ inning.

Barton got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the 2nd, but Seward matched those tallies with two of their own in the 3rd as Ewell smacked a solo home run and Chavez and Orr ripped back to back doubles to score another run to make it 12-2 to the bottom of the 3rd.

The Cougars showed their most fight of the day in the bottom of the 3rd, using four hits and a Seward error to score four times to get back into the game at 12-6.

Both sides had their chances in the 4th and 5th innings, but couldn't change the scoreboard and it remained a 12-6 game into the 6th

Seward smacked three more doubles in the top of the 6th and benefitted from two Barton errors to score four times to stretch their lead to 16-6.

Barton got two doubles of their own to score a run in the bottom of the inning, but they couldn't manage to extend the game as Seward reliever Brittany Hopkins got a groundout to wrap things up as the run rule kicked in with a 16-7 Lady Saints win.

The game featured 30 hits, 17 by Seward and 13 by Barton. Eight different Seward players had hits in the victory and four different players had 3 or more hits in the contest.  Chavez had a big game, going 3 for 4 with 3 doubles and 3 RBI's while Orr had 3 hits, a double, and 3 RBI's as well.  Ewell extended her season long hit streak to 18 games, going 2 for 4 with a double, a home run, and 3 RBI's for the Lady Saints.  Seward starter Jaclyn Wagner benefitted from the offensive outburst, earning her 7th win of the season despite allowing 11 hits and 6 runs in just 4 innings of work.

SEWARD COUNTY/BARTON GAME TWO BOX SCORE

The Lady Saints finish the regular season at 45-11 overall and Seward wraps up their Jayhawk West Conference schedule at 12-4.  Barton falls to 18-21 overall on the year and finishes tied for last in the Jayhawk West at 3-13.

Seward will take a 7 game win streak into next weekend's Region VI Tournament where they will take on Garden City at 12:00 on Saturday in Wichita in the first round.
