Saints get a road win over Garden City 85-73

GARDEN CITY, Kan.- The Seward County Community College men's basketball team defeated Garden City Community College, 85-73, on Wednesday night. The Saints improved to 14-10 overall and 7-8 in conference play, one game back of Hutchinson for the fourth spot in the Jayhawk West.

In the first half, Seward started hot and shot 7-of-13 from behind the three-point line and 55% from the field. To end the first half, the Saints went on a 12-5 run to take a 44-30 lead at halftime. The Saints were without two of their top scorers in Greg Johnson and Branton McCrary, but the bench would come in and step up to the challenge. Seward went to a lineup that included 7'0 Ahmed Ibrahim and 6'10 Rostyslav Novitskyi that brought trouble for the Bronbusters that could not match the interior presence the Saints had.

Seward kept the pressure on the rim in the second half and made a point to attack the rim at every offensive position. The second half the Saints would be in a free throw battle with the Broncbusters, as the foul total for both teams quickly got into the bonus. Seward shot 11-22 from the free-throw line in the second half, the Broncbusters shot 19-24 and used this to get back into the game. With a nine-point lead, Roy Clarke knocked down a three and got fouled to expand the lead back into double-digits. Seward kept Garden City from a late run to secure the road victory and remain in the hunt for a home playoff game.

The Broncbusters were led by Tahlik Chavez with 19 points and four rebounds. Traylynn Spencer provided 11 points and four assists in the contest.

The Saints were paced by Kyle Cardaci with 21 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Roy Clarke added 16 points, Rostyslav Novitskyi had 13 points and Griffin Brosowske scored 12 points off of the bench.

Seward will be at Pratt Community College on Saturday to face off against the Beavers at 7:30 pm.
