Saints baseball season opener in Weatherford Texas

LIBERAL, Kan.- Seward County Community College baseball travels to Weatherford Texas for the first games of the season. Friday they will face off against Galveston College at 3 PM, followed by Weatherford College at 7 PM and will repeat this same schedule on Saturday to wrap up the weekend.

The Saints were 26-27 overall last season and 17-15 in Conference action. Last season they ended with a three-game losing streak and a first-round exit in the Region playoffs to Fort Scott Community College. Seward finished sixth in the Jayhawk West, tied with Barton Community College at 17-15. The Saints will have nine Sophomores that will be back from the previous season with AJ Folds, Richard Armijo, Zane Alexander, Kason Haggard, Tylor Richey, Wyatt Grant, Steven Craddock, KP Werner, and Cory Didier.

In the fall they were able to scrimmage and Head Coach Mike Davidson saw growth in sophomores Folds and Werner, "Most impressive fall we had was AJ Folds and KP Werner, both improved at the plate quite a bit." Coach Davidson Continued, "Aj showed a lot of plate discipline and KP has shown he can drive the baseball." Folds ended the season with a .326 batting average and Werner .291 batting average.

Coach Davidson talked about the mentality the sophomores have been providing to the freshman and what this year means to them, "Our whole Sophomore class is trying to do it right because they are trying to leave a mark and leave a good impression as everything is a matter of record now." Coach Davidson continued, "This is their opportunity to put their stamp on the program and hopefully follow in the footsteps of the guys that have come before them."

The weather here in Liberal has prevented the team from just indoor workouts in the new Sharp Family Champions Center but their opponents already have played games last weekend. Coach Davidson understands that there will be mistakes early but looks for the team to learn from them, "We have not been able to get outside a whole lot, so we are going to make some mistakes." Coach Davidson added, "The biggest thing we have been teaching all week is to be accountable, do your job and most importantly don't panic. Bad things are going to happen first time out, good things are going to happen just don't panic and stay the course."
