Odessa, Texas – After nearly a two-week layoff, the Seward County Community College baseball team hit the road and split a doubleheader with the Odessa College Wranglers, taking the opener, 5-1, while dropping the nightcap, 10-7, on Saturday. The Saints, who have not played since February 3, are 3-3 on the season.
GAME ONE
The Saints supported Tanner King with five runs and that was more than enough. King (1-0) tossed a complete game gem, allowing one run on two hits while striking out 10 and walking three over seven innings.
Braxton Allen, Austin Folds and Ben Tsui each had two hits in Seward's 11-hit attack.
The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning on the strength of RBI singles by KP Werner and Allen and a run-scoring error. Cayde Ward extended the advantage to 4-0 with a solo shot in the third.
King's only misstep came in the fourth inning when a wild pitch scored the lone Odessa run.
Seward tacked on another run in the fifth to complete the scoring when Cruz Shope drove in Tsui with a single to make it 5-1.
GAME TWO
The Saints scored early, but defensive lapses in a five-run, fifth inning turned a 6-2 lead into a 7-6 deficit with three of the runs being unearned. Seward committed four errors in the contest.
SCCC starter Jake Lombardelli (1-1) allowed seven runs, only four earned, on six hits, struck out four and walked three over five innings. Braeden Gould pitched the final three frames, giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out two and walking none.
Joe Kuhn got the Saints off to a fast start with a three-run homer and Zane Alexander drew a bases loaded walk to give Seward a 4-0 margin in the first inning. The Saints padded its lead to 6-1 in the second inning on Cayde Ward's RBI double and Ben Tsui's run-scoring fielder's choice.
Ward had three hits and was a homer shy of the cycle while Braxton Allen added two hits for Seward.
Odessa scored a run in the fourth before taking control of the game in the fifth.
