A frustrating season for the Seward County Saints continued Saturday afternoon at Lawson-Biggs Field in Great Bend as Seward managed just two runs in a doubleheader against the Barton Cougars as Barton wrapped up its first ever sweep of the Saints with 7-1 and 11-1 wins to send the Saints spiraling to 9-15 in Jayhawk West Conference play with two weekends to go.
After watching Barton hit walk off home runs in both games on Friday, the Saints watched again as the Cougars left the yard early on Saturday as Taylor Langston went deep for Barton in the 2nd to put the Cougars up early 1-0 in game three.
Seward answered back as Addison Kaasch singled home a run in the top half of the 3rd to tie the game at one but Barton struck for two more in the 4th to retake the lead 3-1.
It remained a 3-1 game to the 6th when Barton opened things up, banging out five hits, including four for extra bases to score four runs and take a 7-1 lead.
The Saints went down quietly in their final at bats in the 7th as Barton clinched the series win with a 7-1 victory.
Barton outhit Seward 12-7 in the game as Errett Edwards and pitcher Brian Tims were the only two Saints with more than one knock in the loss. Tims was handed his eighth loss of the season, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing 10 hits and six runs on the mound for Seward.
SEWARD COUNTY/BARTON GAME THREE BOX SCORE
Looking to find a way to salvage a game in the series, things didn't get off to a good start for the Saints in game four as Barton put two up in the bottom half of the 1st inning to take a 2-0 lead right off the bat.
Barton added another in the 3rd and four more in the 4th to blow the game wide open to 7-0.
The Saints got their lone run of the game in the 5th when Brendan Madsen hit his first career home run to make it a 7-1 game.
Barton answered right away with a run in the bottom of the 5th and then scored again in the 7th to make it a 9-1 contest.
A sacrifice fly for the Cougars made it 10-1 and after loading the bases with a hit batter, Saints pitching hit their sixth man of the game to push home a run and kick in the run rule in an 11-1 Barton win to finish off the sweep.
Seward had nearly as many errors, four, as hits, six in the game. Madsen was the lone offensive bright spot as he was 2 for 3 with Seward's lone RBI and run scored in the game. Jonathan Castillo took the loss on the mound for Seward, failing to get out of the 4th while allowing seven hits and seven runs to fall to 2-5 on the year.
SEWARD COUNTY/BARTON GAME FOUR BOX SCORE
The Saints are swept by Barton for the first time in program history as they fall to 16-28 overall and 9-15 in Jayhawk West Conference play. Barton continues a resurgent campaign as they improve to 33-13 on the year and 15-9 in league action.
Seward will look to snap what is now a five game losing streak in midweek action on Wednesday as they take on Clarendon at Brent Gould Field in a 3:00 first pitch.
