Saints Drilled in Midweek Action

Saints Drilled in Midweek Action

The Seward County Saints roller coaster ride during their 2014 season continued on Wednesday in Borger, Texas as following a four game sweep of Pratt to finish on a high over the weekend, the Saints midweek woes on the mound surfaced once again against Frank Phillips as Seward was blown out 16-3 by Frank Phillips to fall to 22-17 on the year.

The Saints actually got off to a decent start in this one, getting their first two hitters of the game on base and a two out RBI single by Kevin Connolly to put them up 1-0 in the 1st

That was the end of the good news for Seward on the day.

The first three Frank Phillips hitters of their half of the 1st reached base, scoring one run to tie the game at 1 and a groundout pushed home another Plainsmen run to make it 2-1.  A sacrifice fly gave Frank Phillips a 3-1 lead and with two outs in the inning a walk and an error extended the inning for the Plainsmen.  Things went even more downhill from there for the Saints as the next six Frank Phillips hitters reached base with the big blow coming on a three run home run by Jake Klemm to give the Plainsmen a 10-1 lead after just one inning of play.

Seward loaded the bases but couldn't score in the 2nd and did so once again in the 3rd without scoring as they remained behind 10-1.

Frank Phillips extended upon their lead in the bottom of the 3rd, getting a one out double to score two and another double later in the inning to make it a 13-1 game.

The Saints bats went cold through the middle innings and the Plainsmen took advantage, adding two more runs in the 6th on a two out triple to extend their lead to 15-1.

After Seward left two more runners on base in the 7th, Frank Phillips got another two out run in the bottom of the inning to make it 16-1.

The Saints got their first clutch hit of the game in the 8th as Brandon Urquizo doubled with two outs to score a pair making it 16-3, but that was all that they would get as they fell by that same count 16-3 as a strikeout ended the game in the 9th

Despite the lopsided score, the Saints actually outhit the Plainsmen in the game 15-14.  But, it was Seward's inability to cash those runners in that was their downfall as the Saints left a season high 13 runners on in the loss while scoring just 3 runs.  Urquizo finished 3 for 5 with 2 RBI's and the Saints only extra base hit of the game at the top of the lineup.  Connolly finished 3 for 4 with Seward's other RBI and Tanner Thompson was 2 for 3 with a run scored off the Saints bench.  Nolan McCutcheon suffered the loss on the mound, starting the game and lasting just 1 inning while allowing 7 hits and 10 runs, 3 earned, while walking 2 and striking out 2.

SEWARD COUNTY/FRANK PHILLIPS BOX SCORE

The Saints fall to 22-17 on the year with the loss and will have to sit with the bad taste in their mouth for six days before hitting the field again next Tuesday at home when they will look to get revenge on the Plainsmen at Brent Gould Field at 3:00.
