Seward Wraps Best Nationals Finish in History

Seward Wraps Best Nationals Finish in History

For the first time in school history, the Seward County Lady Saints Tennis Team has finished inside the top 10 at the NJCAA National Tournament.  Seward finished 9th in the 27 team event on Thursday, wrapping up a historical week that included a trip to the National Championship match at #1 doubles and a pair of trips to the National Semifinals at #1 and #2 singles.

The Lady Saints played just one match on Thursday, but it was a big one as sophomores Paula Lopez and Paula Coyos took the court for their final match at Seward County in the NJCAA National Championship match at #1 doubles.  Lopez and Coyos faced a stiff task against their top seeded opponents from ASA in New York, a pair that had only lost four total games in the entire tournament.  The Lady Saints struggled to ever get going in the title match as they were broken three times in the first set as ASA took the set 6-0. In the second it was more of the same for Lopez and Coyos as they failed to break through an iron curtain of the Avengers as ASA took the second 6-0 as well to win the match 2-0.  The runner-up finish for the Seward pair concludes an amazing career for each which saw them win over 200 combined matches and finish in the Final Four at a combined six seperate National Tournament events.

It wasn't all bad news on Thursday though for Seward as when play wrapped up on day five of the tournament, the Lady Saints remained in 9th place with 20 total points in the tournament, marking the programs best finish at the NJCAA National Tournament in school history.

The Lady Saints finals opponents ASA put on a historical run at the tournament, winning all nine flights, becoming the first team in history to do so.  Tyler finished a distant second while Cowley finished two points ahead of the Lady Saints at #6.
