Lady Saints defeat No. 20 Blue Dragons 66-61

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - Seward County Community College defeats No. 20 Hutchinson Community College 66-61 at the Hutchinson Sports Arena on Wednesday, February 16th. The Lady Saints took the lead 63-61 after a pair of free throws by Sydney Wetlaufer to claim the victory. Seward County improves to 21-8 on the season and 17-6 in conference play. The Lady Saints will host Coffeyville Community College in the Greenhouse on Saturday night for Sophomore Night at 6 PM.

Seward County and Hutchinson traded off leads for the majority of the contest and it was a tough game from start to finish. The Lady Saints trailed 13-8 in the first quarter with 3:38 left on the clock. After a three by Sydney Wetlaufer, Seward County regained the lead 14-13 with 2:22 left in the quarter. The blue Dragons responded with a 6-0 run to close out the quarter with a 19-14 advantage. 

The Lady Saints tied the game at 21 all after a layup by Miyah Dubose with 8:23 left before halftime. The Blue Dragons regained a four-point lead at 25-21 over the Lady Saints halfway through the second quarter. Hutchinson took their largest lead of the game 31-26 with less than one minute left in the contest. A three-pointer by Wetlaufer gave the Lady Saints 31-29 deficit at halftime to the Blue Dragons.

To start the third quarter the Blue Dragons took a 33-29 lead with 7:14 on the clock. With 6:30 on the clock, Zhane Thompson connected on a three to give the Lady Saints the lead 34-33. Seward County had a shot as the buzzer sounded to regain the lead but it fell short as the Lady Saints went into the fourth quarter down 46-44.

Sierra Lynch connected on a transition layup to take the lead 49-47 with 6:08 left in the contest. Both teams continued to trade off baskets for the next four minutes of the contest. With a minute left the Blue Dragons and the Lady Saints were tied at 61-61. The Lady Saints took the lead for the final time with a pair of free throws by Wetlaufer and Seward County kept the Blue Dragons scoreless in the final minute. The Lady Saints closed the game out on a 5-0 to defeat No. 20 Hutchinson 66-61 on the road. 

The Lady Saints were led by Zhane Thompson with 17 points and three rebounds. D'Arrah Allen added 14 points and Wetlaufer had 13 points in the contest. 

Seward County will host Coffeyville in the Greenhouse for Sophomore night at 6 PM.
