LIBERAL, Kan. - Seward County Community College women's basketball program defeated Cowley College 69-57 in the Greenhouse on Saturday night. With the win, the Lady Saints improve to 7-5 on the season and 5-3 in conference play. Seward County stretched their lead in the fourth quarter to a game-high 18 point advantage 62-44 and held on for the remainder of the contest. The Lady Saints will face Northwest Kansas Technical College on Monday at 6:30 PM CT in Goodland, Kansas.
In the first quarter, the Lady Saints trailed 10-7 but Halima Salat tied the game with a three from the right wing with 3:41 left in the quarter. Both teams traded leads but Seward County ended the quarter down 14-13 to Cowley. The Lady Saints looked for ways to attack the rim.
As Seward County faced their largest deficit of the game with 5:40 left in the second quarter with Cowley ahead 22-15. The Lady Saints' defense turned into the offense as they went on a 7-2 run and trailed the Tigers 24-22. Seward County took lead right before halftime after a steal by Sierra Lynch as she went coast to coast in the final minute to lead 29-28.
To start the third quarter the Lady Saints went on a 10-3 run as they took a 39-31 advantage halfway through the quarter. The Tigers responded to cut the lead down at 39-36 at the three-minute mark. Seward County closed out the quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 46-39 lead in the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Saints looked to close out the contest as they took their largest lead of the game 62-44 after a Salat three with 4:52 left in the game. Seward County closed out the game and won 69-57 to snap a two game losing streak.
Halima Salat led the team with a career-high 22 points and made six three-pointers in the contest. Zhane Thompson had 19 points, and Sierra Lynch added 17 points for the Lady Saints.
Seward County will face the Mavericks on Monday at 6:30 PM CT in Goodland, Kasnas.
