No. 19 Lady Saints win at the Buzzer 52-50 over Colby

COLBY, Kan.- Tianna Johnson had a putback at the buzzer to propel the No. 19 Lady Saints past Colby Community College 52-50, on the road to improve to 21-5 on the season and 16-2 in Conference play. Seward County Community College shot just 27% from the field but shot 40% in the fourth quarter to battle back in front. With the win tonight and after Hutchinson Community College's loss at Dodge City Community College 69-55, Seward is tied for first place in the Jayhawk West and holds their destiny for the remainder of the season.

With 1:42 left in the game, Aquila Mucubaquire attacked from the top of the key to the right block to get a lay-up and gave the Lady Saints a 50-46 advantage. The Trojans responded with a basket of their own and a stop defensively to get the ball back with 43 seconds left and an opportunity to tie the game or take the lead. After a timeout, Colby executed their set play against Seward's zone defense to get Nyrobi Pillars a lay-up on the low right block to tie the game at 50 all with 24 seconds on the clock. Seward took a timeout to talk things over and to advance the ball to halfcourt. The Lady Saints gave the ball to Tianna Johnson top of the key and she attacked to left block her first attempted fell short but she followed her shot to put it back up and in as the horn sounded. To go along with the game-winner, Johnson recorded her first double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

To start the game the Lady Saints were unable to establish their offense and shot just 1-16 from the field in the first quarter. After Colby connected on lay-up before the end of the quarter Seward faced their largest deficit of the game 14-9. In the second quarter, the Lady Saints responded with defense and got their offense back on track. Seward outscored Colby 16-12 in the second quarter but trailed the Trojans 26-25 at halftime. 

The third quarter was a low scoring affair with both teams unable to connect from three and shot 30% or less from the field. The Lady Saints were still able to outscore the Trojans 12-10 in the quarter and take a 37-36 lead in the final quarter. Both teams kept the game within a two-possession game for the rest of the way out. The game saw 17 ties and 18 lead changes and it came down to whoever had the ball last and Lady Saints outlasted the Trojans.

Colby was led by Brittanie Brickhouse with 10 points on 5-10 from the field and 6 rebounds. The other top scorer for the Trojans was Pillers with 9 points and 2 rebounds.

The other top scorers for Seward were Destiny Alston and Ayanna Smith both with 7 points.

The No. 19 Lady Saints will be back in action on Saturday to take on Barton Community College at 6 PM in the Greenhouse for Sophomore Night.
