CONCORDIA, Kan. – The No. 17 Lady Saints basketball team used a 9-0 second quarter run to bolt past the Cloud County Thunderbirds en route to an 82-59 road victory on Saturday. Seward, which has won three of its last four games, improved to 2-0 in the Jayhawk West and 7-2 overall.

Seward had two players record double-doubles with Karolina Szydlowska with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Ayanna Smith adding 12 points and 15 rebounds. Aquila Mucubaquire had a game-high 16 points, Alanis Hill netted 11 and Vanda Cuamba scored 10 for the Lady Saints, who were dominant on the boards, holding a 59-37 advantage. Seward also had 17 assists.

The Lady Saints avoided a slow start this time around and opened an 11-7 lead to start the game, but then fell into a funk. The Thunderbirds stormed back with a 13-2 outburst to take a 20-13 advantage with 2:30 left in the quarter. A timeout by Seward head coach Austin Mefford got the team back on track as the Lady Saints ended the quarter on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 22-21.

Cloud scored the first points of the second quarter to expand its lead to 24-21, but it was all Seward after that. Mucubaquire drained a three to tie the game and Tianna Johnson scored a bucket to give the Lady Saints a 26-24 edge with 7:50 remaining in the second. Seward never trailed again. Cuamba scored the next four points to pace the Lady Saints to a 30-24 advantage and opening a 41-35 margin at the half.

Seward dominated the third quarter, outscoring Cloud, 23-9, to hold a 20-point bulge, 64-44, at the end of three before cruising through the final stanza for the win.

The Lady Saints clamped down defensively on the Thunderbirds, holding them to just 34 percent from the field on 23-of-68 shooting. Seward shot 42.5 percent on 34-of-80 shooting.

Lakya Leslie, Jacy Dalinghaus and Isabella Vazquez each had 10 points for the Thunderbirds, who fell to 6-5 overall.

In the final home game of the semester, Seward hosts Allen County at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Greenhouse.
