Lady Saints Continue Their Hot Hand To Win 16th Straight

IOLA, Kan. – The Seward County women's basketball team continued their hot hand, winning their 16th in a row, defeating the Allen Red Devils 86-46 Saturday in Iola.

Seward County (23-2, 19-2) came out of the gates firing.  After going down 6-3, Mollie Mounsey connected on a three from the left wing to tie the game and start a 12-0 run by the Lady Saints. Seward held the Red Devils scoreless for the next four minutes.  The quarter was ended with an 8-0 run by the Lady Saints to take a 24-10 lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter started sloppy for both teams, combining for six turnovers in the first three minutes.  Play picked up with the Lady Saints going on a 10-0 run midway through the quarter. Silvia Veloso put the Lady Saints up 20 with a corner three, to make the score 33-13.  Following five quick points by Allen, Seward ended the quarter on a 9-1 run to take a 48-20 lead into halftime.

Seward shot 50 percent (17 of 34) from the floor including 11-of-20 from behind the arc. The Lady Saints held Allen to 32.1 percent (9 of 28) from the floor and just 1-of-5 from deep.  Mollie Mounsey connected on 6-of-7 three-point attempts, scoring 18 points in the first half.

Allen used a 6-1 run to start the second quarter to bring the score to 49-26.  However, the Lady Saints answered the Red Devils a 9-0 run starting with a Mounsey assist to Brennyn Seagler on a fast break. With just under a minute to play, Mounsey hit her 7th three of the game to make the score 65-31.

It was much of the same in the fourth quarter, with the Lady Saint slowly extending their lead until Daelynn Lee hit a free throw to give the Lady Saints their largest lead of the day at 40 points, by a score of 79-39. The lead stayed at 40 until the game ended at 86-46.

Seward finished shooting 42.3 percent (30 of 71) from the floor, while holding the Red Devils to 30.8 percent (20 of 65) from the field.  The Lady Saints connected on 17-of-41 three-point attempts and kept Allen to 1-of-11 from behind the Arc.

The Lady Saints forced the Red Devils into 29 turnovers, with 17 of them being steal.  Three Lady Saints scored in the double-figures – Mounsey (25 pts), Hernandez (14 pts) and Green (10 pts).  The 25 points from Mounsey pushed her up one spot to number six on the all-time scoring list, now with 1,152 career points.
