No. 15 Lady Saints win in record-breaking fashion

COLBY, Kan. – It was a record-breaking night Saturday night in Colby, as the No. 15 Seward County Lady Saints basketball team came away with their largest margin of victory in KJCCC play in school history, defeating the Colby Trojans by 77 points, by a score of 113-36.

There was a feeling early on, that the game might get out of hand, with the Lady Saints connecting on three of their first four shots, taking an 8-0 lead.  A timeout by the Trojans to stop the run worked, as they came out of the break to hit a three-pointer.  That would be the lone basket made by Colby for the remainder of the quarter, however, as the Lady Saints finished on a 29-0 run over the next seven minutes.

Amy Scott started off her career-night with scoring 9 of her career-high 22 points in the first quarter.  Seward shot 63.6 percent (14 of 22) from the floor, while holding the Trojans to a dismal 9.1 percent (1 of 11).

The Lady Saints cooled down in the second quarter, trading baskets with the Trojans through the entire quarter.  A steal and fast break basket by Silvia Veloso pushed the Seward lead to 39 points, Colby quickly halted the momentum and cut the lead back to 35 with two straight scores. Despite Colby's efforts, the Lady Saints still gained a 12-8 second quarter scoring advantage to take a 38-point lead into halftime, by a score of 49-11.

Seward ended the first half hitting 18 of 38 attempts (47.4%), while keeping the Trojans to under 20 percent shooting on 5 of 29 attempts (17.2%).

Colby came out in the third quarter by cutting their deficit to 34-points, but Seward picked up their pace by going on a 26-0 run, starting with a Mollie Mounsey layup.  The run pushed the Lady Saint lead to 60 points with just under two minutes to play in the quarter.  Colby outscored the Seward 5-4 over the final two minutes to keep the lead at 59 points through three.

With a sizable lead, the Lady Saints kept their starters out of the entire fourth quarter, but that didn't stop Seward from extending their lead.  At the 4:16 mark, Brennyn Seagler connected on a three to push the Lady Saint lead to 69-points, tying the school-record for largest margin of victory.  Seward wasn't done yet, however, as they ended on a 13-5 run to break the record, winning by 77-points, 113-36.

The Lady Saints finished the game shooting 55.7 percent (44 of 79) from the floor and 45.9 percent (17 of 37) from behind the arc. Seward held the Trojans to 22.1 percent (15 of 68) from the field and 14.3 percent (3 of 21) from deep.

Three Lady Saints scored in double-figures – Scott (22 pts), Mounsey (18 pts), and Lexi Hernandez (17). In a season where they Lady Saints have struggled to gain a rebounding margin, Seward out-rebounded Colby 55-40.

Seward will finish their road-stretch at 6 p.m. on Wednesday (Jan. 10) as the travel to Dodge City to take on the Conquistadors. Dodge City will live-stream the game and it can be heard on 107.5 KSCB with Brock Kappelmann (pxp) on the call.
